When I open a file with a remote protocol such as smb://, gedit opens it up just fine but I cannot compile the document. Unfortunately I don't see an error message.
This should be magically fixed by using Gnome 2.22 or newer with the Gvfs fuse mounts integrated. Latex simply doesn’t handle the old smb:// protocol, but with Gvfs mounts it can simply access the path.

This is right, GVFS should solve some of those problems. But to be safe, I think I'll add some kind of abstraction layer that creates local temp files for LaTeX.
