Error detecting dpi and bpp when loading a tiff image

I am trying to load an 8 bpp, 300 dpi uncompressed tiff image. After loading the image FreeImage reports a 72dpi and FIT_RGBA16 image type of 48 bpp.
Please note that I use .NET FreeImage version 3.15.1.0.
What could be the reason for this behavior of FreeImage?
