I'm not sure if this will help speed implementation, but I have been playing with the 0.29b implementation of MSN group chat, which may in fact be unintentional.
When an MSN user invites me into a group chat, I get a single chat window from that person. When the other people in the chat send messages, new windows open for them. When I send a message to the group chat window, it goes to everyone in the chat. When I send a message to an individual window, it goes directly to that person.
I am a big MSN user who has frequent group chats, so I would be happy to help test this out.

stopped working for me...version 3 and 2.x none of them work for some
reason anymore....so all features native to msn im starting to really
missing....i have to go on my roomates comp when he isnt around...its
sad even

I also add my vote for this (or two or three if I can get away with
it) - this is the most important feature lacking from Fire in my
opinion - please add ASAP.

I'd love to see this, I constantly am having to launch the MS
version of Messenger to talk in group chats, and I hate to have to
use more than one program, that's why I use it in the first place

Problem still exists in 0.31 and would be nice to see if fixed.

And another vote from here.
I just *hate* to have to switch over to M$N Messenger.

Given the behavior now that we don't have this when you
enter a group chat, I think this is a blocker for 1.0. It's
just too embarrassing not to fix.

I started implementing this yesterday, and Mark has gotten it pretty far
along. We should be good on this front for 1.0.
