No

When you record a new demo it doesnt save it to where
the demo_dir variable is set, just to /qw/.

Well, it actually records it to whatever gamedir the client
sees: be it a real gamedir (eg: gamedir fortress) or a gamedir
specified by the server for client (eg: sv_gamedir qw when
your mod is in, say, quake/ktpro).

Demo_dir on the other hand, is purely for choosing which
folder will be the root folder in the demos menu. It's not
supposed to specify the gamedir to record to :D

I already modified playdemo to check demo_dir, so why not
record? I think it is a good idea to have it as an option.

Quake (and every game since) records to gamedir so as to
prevent loading a demo full of say, TF media precaches
    in /QW, etc etc.
