I think you need to "guess" where the keys are on a US keyboard, for example ~ is on the key to the left of 1.
This could need fixing at some point, so it's right on the bugs page...

Eventually I recognized the true problem, as it happens with my system as well.
Attached is a patch that makes the cheat screen use only normal keys.
the * key is also the key '8' so that should work.

The key isn't actually in the portuguese keyboard - at all, i've tried all keys, with all modifiers (not the modifiers combinations of course)
