I actually had just this same problem a few days ago. I wrote to the DRI-devel list, but apparently I wasn't clear in my wording. moving the DRM module to /lib/modules/2.4.0-test10/misc/ got me running in the short term, but the machine began behaving oddly, locking up at odd points, mostly related to 3d. I ended up wiping out my copy of linux and reinstalling, then pulling a fresh copy of CVS dri before I realized the problem. I'll be going to back to 10-pre5 as soon as I get DRI functional again. I'd heartily recommend adding a mention of this to the compile guide. Semi-OT - I'm new to cvs, how do I pull a specific branch instead of the trunk? I'd like to run ATI-4-1-1 instead of the trunk, but I'm somewhat clueless. --- =?iso-8859-1?Q?J=F6rn?= Nettingsmeier <net...@fo...> > wrote: >hello, dri-devel folk ! > >i sent this letter to daryll strauss, and he told me to forward it >to you. >please keep me cc:ed on replies. > >regards, > >jörn > > > >Daryll Strauss wrote: >> >> Could you resend this to the dri...@li... list? >> That's probably the right place to get it exposure. >> >> - |Daryll >> >> On Sat, Oct 28, 2000 at 05:37:13PM +0200, Jörn Nettingsmeier wrote: >> > hello daryll ! >> > >> > sorry if you're the wrong person to bother with this, but i had >> > difficulty finding another email contact. >> > >> > i have had great difficulty to get quake3 to run with xf 4.0.1 and >> > the DRM module from kernel 2.4.0-test10pre5. >> > i found that the module location has changed: from >> > /lib/modules/version/misc to /lib/modules/kernel/driver/char/drm/ . >> > thus the xserver wouldn't find it on startup and fall back to >> > software rendering. >> > >> > since i'm using kmod, i would have expected the Xserver to send a >> > request to the kernel which would make kmod load the drm module. >> > obviously, this is not the case. imho, it's somewhat >> > counter-intuitive that X uses modprobe to accomplish this. >> > >> > i worked around the problem by creating symbolic links, but this is >> > definitely not what linus had in mind when he decided to clean up >> > the lib/modules tree :) >> > >> > could you forward the workaround to the folks who maintain the DRI >> > user guides ? >> > it's not uncommon for 3d users to live on the cutting edge wrt >> > kernels, so this hint might save many people a lot of hassle. >> > >> > many thanks to you and all DRI contributors for bringing quake back >> > to linux :) >> > >> > all the best, >> > >> > jörn > >-- >Jörn Nettingsmeier >home://Kurfürstenstr.49.45138.Essen.Germany >phone://+49.201.491621 >http://www.folkwang.uni-essen.de/~nettings/ > >_______________________________________________ >Dri-devel mailing list >Dri...@li... >http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/dri-devel _____________________________________________________________ Get free email ---> http://athlonoc.mail.everyone.net Half.com the hottest site for DVDs, CDs & more!
