Are there any plans to implement a more sophisticated regex engine, such as using the boost regex library?
For example, the lookahead and lookbehind features in Perl 5.8 regex(supported by boost regex) would really help when writing a new language file.

Yes it does.
It is easy enough to add a new language extension on Windows by
using the configuration file:
