Hi Gautam, 1. Segment package contains implementation to demonstrates how to use the CRF package for sequence labelling. The example that you claim to have run successfully, was because of this implementation. For most beginners who want to use the CRF package for sequence labelling, this implementation works. 2. The MaxentClassifier package contains an implementation to demonstrate how to use the CRF package to implement a maximum entropy based classifier. The users of CRF packages can use the barebone infrastructure to implement their own algorithms on top of it. This is just a demonstration of it. 3. You do not need to write you own featuregenrator always. For very simple users, the type of features that have been implemented in the CRF package, generally are sufficient. For advanced users, who implement their own features, will have to write their own featuregenrator. 4. A good place to start knowing a little more about the CRF package will be the little but sufficient documentation. In your installation directory.. CRF/doc/introduction/index.html 5. Java code is quite often self-explanatory. I would suggest you to spend some time with reading the Segment package code and try to understand how the sample example that you executed worked.
