I have a Compact Flash, /dev/hda, and I can format the
Flash as ext2 and boot using lilo. How do I create a
CramFS image and make it bootable.

I'm also trying to use cramfs as a root filesystem. I'm
wanting to use grub as my bootloader though. Have you had
any luck with booting a kernel stored on a cramfs filesystem?

You must have an initrd where you mount cramfs and then do
    a pivot_root
