After several days of work, finally got this to work.
Laptop1 had disk on IDE, and laptop2 (newer) on SATA, tried ALL the tricks in the book, like MergeIDE from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082, and resetting video/disk drivers to STANDARD as per:
to no avail, the new image kept failing to boot with:
0xc000000e " boot selection failed because the required device is inaccessible"
0x0000007b 0xfffff880009a97e8 0xffffffffc0000034
Crashed at: classpnp.sys
The TRICK was to enable AHCI in Win7 before the clonezilla:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61869-ahci-enable-windows-7-vista.html
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976
Set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci to "0".
Do you know if it's still necessary to enable AHCI in Win7 before using Clonezilla to ensure it will boot without the Win7 CD? I have an OEM Win7 that I very much do not want to lose on a rapidly failing hard drive.
Thanks!
Alana
