I notice that the Shutdown submenu in Classic Shell doesn't switch from Shutdown to Install and Shutdown (indicated various ways in various versions of Windows, at least from XP on; in Win7 it is a yellow exclamation point, I think) when there are "Important" updates to install.
And, the Shutdown option doesn't cause installation.
It would be nice to offer Install and Shutdown as an additional (rather than replacement) option in the Classic Shell shutdown menu.
I've also noticed that sometimes after manually installing an update, that the "real" Start Button shows up, and its Shutdown options, rather than the Classic Shell... but not every time.
I looked at this a while back, but was unable to find a way to either:
a) detect when there are pending updates
b) shut down in a way that installs the updates
The ExitWindowsEx function (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa376868(v=vs.85).aspx) should ideally have supported a parameter to call "Install Updates and Shutdown" out of the box. MS has provided no way to do that, only their built-in Start menu can do that (you might have luck with StartIsBack)
Glenn, check out this post in the Classic Shell forum: http://classicshell.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=258
@Glenn, good news. The latest Classic Shell version 3.9.0 has 100% lookalike of the Windows 7 Start Menu including integration with the Install and Shutdown functionality. Basically, Classic Shell is now 2 different implementations of the Start Menu in 1 product. :)
Thanks for the good news. Was traveling, and no time to investigate. I have Classic Shell 3.6.8, and it claims it is up-to-date!
3.6.8 is the latest stable version. If you want to install the beta you have to download it manually.
OK, now that it is released, I find only one deficiency.... when there are updates available, the Shutdown option changes to "Install and Shutdown"... but it would be better if Shutdown and "Install and Shutdown" were both available in that case.
Try holding down the Shift key while you click "Install and Shutdown".
Thanks, I'll try that, but if it means Shutdown only, that is pretty obscure. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised that that might have been the way XP did it too... but it is still pretty obscure. An additional menu entry would be much more user friendly.
