Hi guys, just one question: When is the release for 1.6.1 planned? Will it ever happen? It is only meant as a "bugfix" release, so I fail to see why it takes sooo long. Or is something not yet ready to be released? Regards, Christian |

You know, I was thinking about this just this morning. Nice coincidence. I'm thinking that it might be an idea to do a minor version release fairly regularly every couple of months. If we do this, probably we should also consider updating the data files as well. All the reported bugs have been fixed. As to translations, the majority of them have been completed. I haven't heard from the other translators for a while, so we might consider that their translations won't be completed anyway. Sending them a last email with a deadline can be an option, though. I think it's time to get the 1.6.1 release out. Sending out a last note to the translators is good idea. We need to make some decisions about data file updates. Grant has committed updates to the extrasolar planets catalog and Solar System locations. It would be easy to integrate these into 1.6.1. We should consider updating Cassini as well--the current trajectory is only good through mid-2010. What other data file updates are important for 1.6.1? Chris, please, consider the Mac OS X specific bug I already reported to you some time ago : special characters (é, è. etc) are crashing Celestia if an URL using these characters is used from the favorite menu. How about finally releasing 1.6.1? Why not set now a fix date for that and try to reach it? For example: End of May for a RC and second week of June for the final version. The end of the second week of June is reasonable for a final 1.6.1 release. I've got two key fixes that I want to make: - incorporate the Cassini solstice mission (the trajectory in 1.6.0 extends only through summer 2010; but with the solstice mission approved, we now have at least a preliminary trajectory through 2017) - investigate crash bug with translated strings on Mac version reported by Martin I also want to look into fixing the eclipse shadow bug with oblate planets. This fix is working in trunk. If it's not to difficult to merge it into 1.6.1, I'd like to have it in that release too. I've committed the Solstice Mission update for Cassini to the trunk. There's a new xyzv file for the Solstice Mission; I chose to separate it from the rest of the mission in order to keep the plotted trajectory from looking too messy (some controls for orbit plotting would be very useful here...) The trajectory ends with Cassini entering Saturn's atmosphere on Sept. 15, 2017. The final few orbits take Cassini inside Saturn's rings--it's fun riding along on this part of the mission. I generated the xyzv file using a new version of spice2xyzv that I'll check in shortly. The bug occurs on recent Mac (Intel) with Snow Leopard. I NEVER experienced it on my G5 with OS X Tiger : Just turn ON full screen mode, then turn back to windowed mode. Celestia then crashes. The bug is systematic and easy to reproduce. I reproduced it on several Mac models... -Martin. |

In your case, the texture resources are lost when the OpenGL context changes in the switch from fullscreen to windowed. On Martin's system, I believe that the textures and vertex buffers are lost, and Celestia crashes when it tries to render geometry with invalid vertex buffers. Martin, could you experiment with switching from fullscreen to windowed when no geometry is visible other than stars? I'm going to commit the updated Cassini mission to 1.6.1 today. After that, I think that we'll be ready to make a 1.6.1 RC for Windows and Linux. --Chris |

I still haven't had any luck reproducing this problem on my MacBook Pro. One test system has an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M, the other a GeForce 9600. Since the hardware is pretty similar, I'm not too surprised that they're behaving the same. I want to proceed with building a 1.6.1 package for Windows (prerelease) while continuing to work on the Mac fullscreen bug. Most of the testing that users will do on the Windows package is relevant for all platforms. Has anyone that's seeing the disappearing textures bug tried running the Qt version? Agreed. At least, we should make a Windows release candidate available, and if we can fix the Mac bugs in the mean time, great. I noticed that a lot of the data file updates haven't made it into the 1.6.1 branch yet. The version of extrasolar.ssc in 1.6.0 is over a third larger than the one in 1.6.1.
