#1 Period in username causes error

Alan Conrad notes that when using the
username 'alan.c', he gets:

Jan 31 17:58:38 fred bpalogin[1374]: Listening on port
1030
Jan 31 17:58:38 fred bpalogin[1374]: T_MSG_LOGIN_RESP -
Login failure: other error

Changing to another username without a period prevents
this problem.
