BUG #1330 "PC speaker changing frequency witout switching off" seems fixed, definitely better now (it's CLOSED)
But there seems to be a regression with SB16 emulation. With 2.6.1 I can get sound (host is XP, 3 GHz, not very reliable, but somewhat valid sound is there), but 2.6.6 does no longer work. It can brew "gun noise" at best, and sometimes BOCHS even silently crashes (exits without telling why) as soon as I try to access SB16 from the guest.

Thanks to the devels for fixing bugs and improving BOCHS ... I tested BOCHS 2.6.6 (Win32) and made following discoveries:
BUG #1332 "XDMA doesn't like BOCHS DMA controller | Multiple sector setting" is not fixed https://sourceforge.net/p/bochs/bugs/1332/ (it's OPEN)
BUG #1331 "mouse wheel issues with freedos" is fixed partially only https://sourceforge.net/p/bochs/bugs/1331/ (it's CLOSED and I can comment but not reopen it)

Not those issues exactly, but similar sb16 emulation ones:
