#2 Remote enhancements (V2)

An improved version of the previous patch:
- no longer needs to look for :EOF string
- arguments can be passed in on the command line;
they are used to initialise the args[] array.

This supersedes the previous patch.

Note: this should work equally well for 1.3.0.
