Hello Scott, This is just to let you know that I got the last "difficult" part of building a CD set working. The only remaining tasks now are to make the ISO image from and burn it, both of which are "trivial". I'll complete this probably today or tomorrow. Of course, the key part will be to boot the CD images created. Concerning your question about whether it will be possible or worth the effort to load and build all the RH stuff necessary to run anaconda, I have two responses: 1. Yes, I think it is worth the effort. I'm sure it is possible because I've seen (pointed to by a user) an anaconda implementation for Debian that uses apt, ..., but I can understand that it may be a bit too much -- see my next response. 2. I'm going to finish the current path I have made to the point of being able to create a CD set. However, I think that the future will be DVDs rather than CDs, so I don't want to spend too much time on CDs. In addition, though anaconda is probably the best Linux installer, and will surely become more important in the future, I think it is *way* too complicated for what I want. What I want is a DVD (or a set of CDs) that will restore all my rpms to the state I was in previously. It occurred to me that I know how to build a Bacula rescue boot CDROM, and I know how to install rpms while booted into this system. Why not just create a CD set that has all the rpms I want, and only those rpms on it, then make a trivial script that installs them. If we do that, I would have pretty much what I want, and the work necessary to build the CD set and install the rpms would be trivial compared to a full anaconda CD set. It would also be less prone to errors. Once I have completed the current work, I'm going to look into doing the above. -- Best regards, Kern |

Hello Kern, The following build dependencies are either Red Hat produced software or have been adopted by Red Hat and never used by SuSE: pump-devel >= 0.8.20 is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 kudzu-devel >= 1.1.52 is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 rhpl is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 booty is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 bogl-devel >= 0:0.1.9-17 is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 bogl-bterm >= 0:0.1.9-17 is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 elfutils-devel is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 beecrypt-devel is needed by anaconda-10.1.0.2-1 The only one that makes me wonder, as re building them on SuSE is pump. SuSe uses the ISC dhcp package. Is there any reason you know not to have 2 dhcp clients installed on a system? And how would that affect an installation I wonder. I'm starting to wonder about the whole second phase of install where the system is configured. Regards, Scott |

I think I have change my mind a bit on this. I took a look at the Fedora release and there are no nosrc.rpm files. I'm not sure what I would like to do. I hesitate, because my first reaction is that SuSE should not be creating a new extension that seems to serve no purpose. Until I can understand why it is needed, I'd like to do nothing. In the mean time, I'd recommend that you write a small script (or I'll write one for you) that simply copies all .nosrc.rpm extensions into .src.rpm. -- Best regards, Kern |

This isn't going to be so simple. I'd suggest that for the moment, if there are any such files, you create a ./buildexceptions script and put them in there, and we call that script just after ./makebuild > > Regards, > Scott > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > The SF.Net email is sponsored by: Beat the post-holiday blues > Get a FREE limited edition SourceForge.net t-shirt from ThinkGeek. > It's fun and FREE -- well, almost....http://www.thinkgeek.com/sfshirt > _______________________________________________ > Bacula-ryol mailing list > Bac...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/bacula-ryol -- Best regards, Kern |

Hello Scott, This is to let you know that I have made some important changes to the Ryol Makefile. In fact, the Makefile and myconfig.make.in have gone away. The Makefile is now generated from Makefile.in and xxx.conf, where xxx.conf is in the same format as myconfig.make.in. One does: ./config xxx.conf to generate the Makefile. If you have modified myconfig.make.in to contain your variables, you might want to copy it to scott.conf. Take a look at kerns.conf to see how I did it. In addition, I've added a lot of new targets to the Makefile. They allow generating all the necessary lists and splitting the distribution into CD images. I have not yet been able to get the final phase working -- I need to find the source for genhdlist to figure out what is going on -- it seems to have RedHat hard coded in it somewhere. I've done a bit of documentation in the README. -- Best regards, Kern |

For example ftp://ftp.ale.org/pub/suse/i386/update/9.0/rpm/src/libxml2-python-2.5.10-62.nosrc.rpm uses the libxml2 tarball but doesn't recompile the libxml2 lib file but copies the one installed by libxml2 package and then builds the python package. Spec attached. It's not handled any differently by rpmbuild. |

Yes, I'll be working on this shortly. I need to do it for both .src.rpm packages, and also for .rpms, because I want to be able to directly download prebuilt rpms and at the user's option skip doing the build of the src.rpms. Hello Kern, Another thought - we need to be able to pass customized command line --defines to rpmbuild on a per package basis, from a configuration file. Actually, multiple builds if you think about packages like bacula. Building bacula, as it currently stands, requires specifying both the build platform and the desired database. Many of my other builds require at least passing a platform parameter, and most packages from dag or freshrpms have many defines to control configure. Regards, Scott |

Hello Kern, I added a second wget target to grab update packages and a second source for base packages. By the way, both the base and update targets should only download a file if it is newer than the local copy, thus you can periodically run the update target to get new stuff. The second base source is because SuSE provides src.rpm and nosrc.rpm packages. nosrc packages could be stuff like themes which actually have no source code or packages for which they can't deliver source. They are a standard srpm with just an install section, no build. This requires some python changes which I leave to you since I know next to nothing here. 1. do_packages() in buildpackages needs to recognize .nosrc.rpm as well as src.rpm. 2. buildinit needs to parse filenames into packagename-version-release and throw out the older versions so that paths.unbuilt only contains a set of newest packages. Hello Scott, One more thought before I head off. I don't think it would be hard to make a target (Python script) that tells you what dependencies are missing for one or all of the source files you want to build. -- Best regards, Kern |

I spent ages loading packages about 6 months ago when I first tried to build the Whitebox release. That is one of the reasons I bought a build machine -- though you only need about 10-20GB free to load everything (actually it takes about 7GB, but you need spare space if you ever want to do an update). Thanks for your updates, and the bug fix. I've modified the build to be a bit more informative, and to stop on either the first or second ctl-c. It depends on whether or not the first one is sucked up by rpmbuild or not. Do "cvs update" and you will get the changed file. Have a good New Year's celebration -- I'm off now for the Champagne. :-) > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > The SF.Net email is sponsored by: Beat the post-holiday blues > Get a FREE limited edition SourceForge.net t-shirt from ThinkGeek. > It's fun and FREE -- well, almost....http://www.thinkgeek.com/sfshirt > _______________________________________________ > Bacula-ryol mailing list > Bac...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/bacula-ryol -- Best regards, Kern |

Hello Kern, Well one thing is certain, which I hadn't thought about (duh). In order to do this you have to have a build host with "everything" installed. I just tried a build with 3 random packages and got build dependency gripes right off the bat. Maybe figure out how to map and include only what is installed on the host system. Or maybe it doesn't matter because only those packages than can be built will be built. |

Hello Scott, I forgot to mention that one of the annoying consequences of using Python is that if you ctl-c the build, it kills the current rpm build but goes on to the next one. You need to enter a zillion ctl-c's to get it to stop. I'm sure that once I learn a bit more about Python, I can fix it by testing for the ctl-c in the package build loop. -- Best regards, Kern |

It is all yours. I'm learning about anaconda - impressive. Certain parts are very clean. Other parts like the comps (Components) are *really* ugly, and way overly complicated IMO -- though it does allow you to view groups of packages, and if you click on one package in the group, it will ensure that any needed parents are included as well. It is absolutely mind boggling what one can do with Python. If I were starting from scratch today with Bacula, I would probably write it in Python, with only some small time critical parts in C helper routines. > > Regards, > Scott -- Best regards, Kern |

It looks like they have already modified anaconda to make it rpm/deb compatible -- nice. I'm wondering if their picax utility for creating ISOs would be what I am looking for. Anyway, I have downloaded their CVS (rather SVN) and will take a close look at it. --=20 Best regards, Kern |
