I was wondering if you would be interested in putting them on the site? Maybe show that we are at least doing something. -- Emil Soleyman-Zomalan |

Shlama Daniel, Could you please take another look at my nisibin BDF font and comment on it? I am willing to do the same for yours. Once we have these done we can start work on the Western script and finally have those guys uploaded to both sourceforge and Xfree86. You can find my font at: www.nishra.com/files/nisibin.bdf Pshena, Emil |

Emil> * There exists 5 other pages containing the English alphabet and Emil> numerals. Do we need to keep these? It depends. If you are using Yudit, I think it can be configured to use multiple fonts. Other programs may need all the glyphs in one font. My recommendation is to create the BDF font with only the Syriac glyphs you need and then maybe merge it in with another font later. Emil> * How do we tell whether or not the letters have correct alignment Emil> in relation to one another? What application do we use to do this? You can test this by using the "Glyph Test" (Ctrl+Z) feature of xmbdfed. Once the dialog comes up, you can select right-to-left to see how the glyphs line up. Just click on the glyph and if the glyph test dialog is up, the glyph will be added to it. When you make changes to the glyphs, they are reflected in the glyph test dialog immediately. Emil> * What other pitfalls should we expect? Aside from the right-to-left nature of Syriac, you probably won't have many other problems. The rest should go pretty easy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Leisher I want God, I want poetry, Computing Research Lab I want danger, I want freedom, New Mexico State University I want goodness, I want sin. The BDF file format as specified currently for use by X11 servers is not suitable for encoding Syriac or Indic fonts, because BDF does not make a distinction between characters and glyphs and has no support for encoding ligatures. Unicode encodes characters but not glyph presentation forms for Syriac and the Indic scripts. You need to agree on some glyph encoding scheme with the rendering engine first, before you can produce a useable Syriac or Indic BDF file. There exists currently no such standard glyph encoding scheme for Syriac and the Indic scripts under X11. Try http://www.pango.org/ instead. Markus |

Hello, A few other people and I are trying to create the necessary Syriac fonts (bdf and others) for Xfree86. We are running into a few problems along the way and definitely have more than a few questions. We have converted several Opentype fonts into bdf fonts but we are faced with the following roadblocks. The editing of these fonts is being done through the use of xmbdfed. * There exists 5 other pages containing the English alphabet and numerals. Do we need to keep these? * How do we tell whether or not the letters have correct alignment in relation to one another? What application do we use to do this? * What other pitfalls should we expect? I'd be willing to send people the fonts to look at and comment on the above questions. We'd appreciate your input and help in this matter. Thanks, Emil Soleyman-Zomalan [ sourceforge.net/projects/ayuta ] |
