The object seems to be messed up in a number of ways. Its normals are
reversed (i.e. the "inside" is actually the outside), which is what is
confusing the raytracer. You should be able to fix this by selecting
"Invert Surface Normals", but that seems to produce a freeze, as do
various other editing operations on this object. I'll investigate further...

It occurred to me that it's quite possible that the hidden
object that may occupy the same place in the scene may be
what's messing with the render.
