hai all, thisi my first post to the list. i read the "antomic philosophy": "The Antomic GNU/Linux distribution is created with simplicity and adaptability in mind. It's quick to install, setup and boot. The focus is on simplicity and convenience for experienced users." i really liked it & wanted to use it but as i see there is no information available as of year 2006. last ISO was released in 2002, 4 years ago, after that no release has been made yet. it seems like project development has stalled. i am willing to use "antomic" as my OS but it has very old softwares: GNU C Library 2.2.5 Linux 2.4.19 XFree86 4.2 GNOME 2.0.2 Mozilla 1.0 GCC 2.95.3 right now we have GCC 4.1.2, Linux kernel 2.6..18 & Firefox 2.0 available onmost other distros. Is anybody working on "antomic" to release "antomic 2006"? -- arnuld http://arnuld.blogspot.com/ -- arnuld http://arnuld.blogspot.com/ |

Hi, Celebrating the start of the month of April we have some things to say. Now onwards the goal of the Antomic Project will drastically change. Some of the things that will be immediately visible in the coming days are as follows. The boring text based under-ten-minute installer will be dropped in favour of a nice looking Qt based graphical installer. The installer will also auto-detect and setup each and every piece of hardware that exists. Work is also underway to implement a auto-detection technology for hardware that hasn't been created yet. This innovative hardware detection technology will obviously be proprietary and not available to any one else. We have already filed for 9 patents in four different countries viz. USA, Barbados, Panama and Ghana. The installer will also for the first time include a special feature to preemptively guess and suggest what kind of software packages the user might need for the next 6 months. The algorithm used to accomplish this will use the users grocery buying patterns as input. For the users that live on the International Space Station, the code dynamically self-modifies itself to use the chemical composition of sweat and blood pressure as input. I've tested this recently and is fit for inclusion in the next release. This code as you might've guessed will be available under the GNU GPL. This Preemptive Guess and Suggest or PGS technology will also be available as a plugin for RPM, which we are going to use as our package management system. The decision to scrap the current sweet and simple shell-script based apkg and replace it with RPM is taken after technology journalists accused the project of being stone-age class. The project developers are also accused of accepting bribe from an extra terrestrial for not including RPM. This accusation is completely inaccurate, we've not yet received the bribe. We really believe that RPM is the way forward. There are some more of such features that you can expect from the future Antomic releases. The reason why we cannot talk about them right now is because we've signed a non-disclosure agreement with our pets. All of the above decisions have already been taken and won't be changed. But because we care so much about your emotional state of mind we'll love to listen to your suggestions and ideas. Yours truly, Vinay Pawar (aka zoyd) http://nodegroup.com/vinay/ |

I know shell scripting > to a good level. > > tell me what i should start with ?? > Antomic packages are built with the help of Makefiles. Check the PackageBuilding wikipage to know more. Currently the makefiles check for build time dependencies, for example libpng is a dependency for emacs, if an emacs package is built without having libpng installed, then emacs won't be able to show the toolbar icons in X. Hence the emacs Makefile checks if libpng is installed before it starts building the package. But, here only basic dependency checking is done. Apkg on the other hand does relational dependency checks. Because if emacs depends on a particular version of libpng and onwards, this should be taken care of. So, it's necessary that the Makefiles also do relational dependency checks at build time. Now, in apkg(path: /usr/bin/apkg) all the dependency checking is done in cycledeps(), such a big chunk of code in a Makefile would be vulgar .. *grin* So, we're looking for a sweet and simple way to do relational dependency checks from Makefiles. Manas Alekar suggests breaking apkg into seperate routines based on their functions into their respective files viz. /usr/lib/apkg/apkg_install, /usr/lib/apkg/apkg_depcheck and so on. That brings us to another question what after the routines are seperated, should they be called as executable scripts from apkg, which then will become a calling script. Or should the routines be sourced into apkg itself, using the 'source' facility in bash. This is both a technical as well as a design issue. Breaking apkg into smaller yet manageable chunks is important because as originally envisioned, the package manager should be easy to play with for sysadmins and power users. Making it both flexible and adaptable. I hope that made some sense :) > any test programs that i can try ?? > That reminds me of something called 'alint'. Inspired from Debian where 'lintian' checks binary packages for bugs and policy violations. 'alint' would check antomic packages for bugs, well formed metadata, policy, etc. So, thats the two things that come to my mind. - Modulating apkg. - Implementing alint. > I see most of the work is going for XFree86. Is there > any major reason for that ?? > Actually the release of XFree86 4.3.0 got delayed. And now there's a politics problem at XFree86, because of which fontconfig-2.2 is delayed, i've already filed a bug as you may have seen in the ActivityLog wikipage. fontconfig is a dependency for X. I'm in touch with Keith. This should be sorted out soon. Also, feel free to use the wiki :) You can also meet me in #antomic or #pluggies channel on the irc.freenode.net IRC server. After 11:00pm IST. Sometimes after 11:30pm IST because I'm not able to get a connection before that. You can use Chatzilla as an irc client that comes with Mozilla. -- Enjoy! i got the antomic working perfectly, with GNOME now i think, i should start with some work. I read about apkg and package format. I know shell scripting to a good level. tell me what i should start with ?? any test programs that i can try ?? I see most of the work is going for XFree86. Is there any major reason for that ?? __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm sorry, there's no way to do a "netinstall". So, you're going to have to download the 267 meg(hope I got the size right) ISO image. Check the 'Download' section on the website. -- regards, Vinay Pawar http://nodegroup.com/vinay/ http://antomic.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/ActivityLog |

Hello all, Let me introduce myself, I'm Anand, I live in France and French is my mother tongue so excuse me in advance for my sometimes weird English. I'm just discovering the Antomic Gnu/Linux distribution. Currently I'm using Debian and Slackware, but I'd be very interested to be part as a user and also a developper of the Antomic project. For a start I need to install the distribution. Is there a way to dload and install a minimal system, and then to "netinstall" the packages I want. thanks Anand |

Hello, Interview with Mark Mitchell - GCC's Release Manager http://tools.devchannel.org/devtools/03/02/21/024211.shtml?tid=39 "The consensus among the Linux kernel developers is that gcc-3 can't be fully trusted and gcc-2.95.[>3] is still the recommended compiler. Do you have some ideas why this is? I'm not an authority on this issue, it would probably be best to talk to the kernel developers themselves about it. However, a few things that might play a role is that the older gcc versions are a lot more lenient towards less-correct C code. Where gcc-3 won't compile a piece of code, gcc-2.95 might compile it just fine. Also the fact that gcc-3 is slower in compiling code might play an important role. The semantics of things like inline assembly have changed a little bit over the years, which might cause issues. And there might be particular bugs that affect the kernel. I do know that some people are building the kernel with GCC 3.x, and having success" This could be problematic for Antomic GNU/Linux if we move to GCC 3.x soon enough. -- Vinay Pawar http://nodegroup.com/vinay/ |

"We're almost ready for release 2.2 of fontconfig. As XFree86 4.3 contains up-to-date versions of the X related libraries (Xrender, Xft and Xft1), release 2.2 is likely to contain just fontconfig. Pull prereleases from here[1], they'll be numbered 2.1.9x." [1] http://nexp.cs.pdx.edu/fontconfig/release/ -- Vinay Pawar http://nodegroup.com/vinay/ |

Until now. Thanks so much for letting us know. Could you attach your /etc/X11/XF86Config so we can try it on those two mice once again. Thanks again, Vinay Pawar |

I have gotten both serial and PS/2 mice to work. Manual setting of mouse driver and protocol was required. Neither mouse was properly detected or enabled using the default "auto" setting in the XF86Config file generated by xf86cfg. I also have an IMPS/2 USB Wheel Mouse which failed auto configuration and have not yet tried to get it working by manual configuration. Also, xf86cfg properly detected both my monitor and graphics card but did not include any "HorizSync" or "VertRefresh" settings so X only worked in the lowest possible resolution. Again, manual setting of these parameters fixed the problem. I initially ran the old xf86config program to get X working, then applied the changes to the config file as generated by xf86cfg. I am very pleased with what you have done so far. Keep up the good gnome work. |

I just came back from my vacation. I'm considering adding the hard-disk-install method in the installer. This along with some small new features in apkg would mean an update, including the bug fixes. Instead of just a bugfix release. Unfortunately asys and alint haven't happened yet. If anyone is interested to take up asys, that would speed up things. Manas' studies are on his head. Anyone interested in bash shell scripting please come forward. -- Vinay Pawar |

Ladislav found Antomic before we could tell him about it. We have already exceeded the 590 downloads mark. Should see that counter grow a bit more. Check: http://www.distrowatch.com/ http://www.distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=antomic Enjoy! Vinay Pawar. |

Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be interested to write a gtk2 based frontend to apkg. That would be cool. Anyone ? -- Vinay Pawar. |

Good news on the GNU/Hurd front. http://kerneltrap.org/node.php?id=438 I haven't read this myself because it's still slashdotted. -- Vinay Pawar |
