(from '95) but I have trouble getting some things to work on the network at work under NT I like the idea of a Direct X allegro though.. maybe it should be called Direct Allegro |

Nah, I haven't tried Memphis. A friend of mine has. He can run my game with no problems (aside from the Winsock 2.0 incompatibility with the WSOCK library). My game uses quite a bit of Allegro (sound, gfx, timers, keyboard handler, mouse handler, joystick routines, datafiles, fixed point functions, etc etc), so I think it's a fairly safe bet to say that Win98 doesn't choke on Allegro programs in general. It's still in a very early stage. It's currently in the form of a DLL that can be used from probably any win32 compiler (tested it with lcc win32 & DJGPP+RSXNTDJ). So -don't worry- you won't need Visual C++ to make WinAlleg programs. Currently the library itself (a DLL) needs Visual C++ (v5) to compile though. But, someone else (Rocky Burt) is working on decent directx header files for gcc, so it will (hopefully?) compile with Mingw32 (minimalist gnu win32) and, probably also with DJGPP+RSXNTDJ using the same headers. You can download version alpha 1 of WinAlleg from my homepage ( http://www.ping.be/~ping7970/ ). It doesn't even crash- it just gets to the point where it's installing some handler (keyboard, timer, I can't remember?) and it just sits there. I can easily switch back to the desktop and terminate it with no trouble. I don't really care though. And by the way, while I'm on the subject of NT incompatibilities, the WSOCK library will not work on NT... because NT is using Winsock 2.0, which changes the VxD that WSOCK likes to blindly peek and poke at... :) Same goes for Memphis.
