Dowser Web Search News

Dowser is a research assistant for the web. It clusters results from major search engines, associates words that appear in previous searches, and keeps a local cache of all the results you click on in a searchable database. The Windows binary now has a slick installer. A job has been added to check the latest version and show a download link if a new version is up. You can turn this off on the settings page. Also added is support for proxy authentication. An option has been added to edit the title, description, and keyword list on the summary page. A nasty crash bug with Mozilla 1.0RC1 and the new search plugin has been fixed.

Finally have something for you to play with: here are the sources as of 4 August 2004, plus a precompiled Mac .Application. Windows binary coming soon.

Mac: download and mount the disk image, and copy Dowser.app to your apps directory.

Source: requires Python 2.3, pysqlite & sqlite. Download and uncompress source zip. Run "python dowser.py"

Dowser's GUI is actually a small http server. When you start the progam it will attempt to open a browser window to "http://127.0.0.1:5903". If the open fails, try pasting that URL into your favorite browser.
