I'd like to see some more general form of authentication & have some incentive to do this (to integrate with our LDAP server).
This won't make the next release & I don't know how high a priority this is for others.
Currently, usernames must be email address & so a USEFUL redesign to use HTTP AUTH will require us to change this too.
We do welcome new developers if you want to help out, though. ;-)
