Big discrepancy between old and new statistics for windjview

I noticed that the new download stats for my project windjview are hugely different from the old stats. E.g. for this January (2011-01-01 to 2011-01-18) the old stats are reporting 174168 project downloads at the time of writing this, but the new stats are reporting 551107 downloads - this is 3 times more. In particular, the main download file WinDjView-1.0.3-Setup.exe shows the same discrepancy ratio: 156746 (old) vs 506667 (new) downloads.

A number of similar tickets have been closed with a comment "there are differences in bot-detecting algorithms, so this is expected". However, it seems to me that if the difference is this huge - 3 times - then there is a real underlying problem here. This discrepancy also makes both results look much more unreliable and less credible - how would I know which one to trust if they are so different? Therefore I would appreciate it if these inconsistencies in reporting could be investigated.

The team has investigated these download stats, and they have determined that the inflated stats in the Beta are a result of a mis-behaving download manager. With this information, the team is working on tweaking our algorithms so that the beta stats system will be better at filtering these illegitimate downloads.
