First idea that comes to mind is to add a text-note near the option, in the preferences - maybe as a "label" just bellow the option, or as a "hint" on mouse-over. See attached image Probably can be improved - but can do as a starting point Also, in windows it seems it listens on all interfaces (0.0.0.0) - if it was possible to improve to only listen in the "loopback interface" (127.0.0.1), that would be safer and more discrete.

However the scenario described using 3D representations seems probably difficult to fit well a the tree structure I never tried to represent many different layers however I think that one could try using filters, for example in each node put icons and then use the filters to show one layer of a certain icon (and hide other layers). Overall, I get the feeling that the best fit might be to make your own script. I meant it in the sense, that I would try to make it all as-much-as-possible be controlled and executed from within a single script. And launch that script the easiest way possible (?init script?) However, after that Dimitry indicated a better way with 1.7.2 - with it, you could just create your own java program which uses freeplane "embedded'ly" br

Freeplane is closer to perfect than anything else I've found - I use it daily to take notesm organize tasks, document investigations... even personal management.. Simple example: can now find the papers from when I made my cars-insurance, 5 years ago, and search all involved burocratic conditions... never, ever would I have that if it was not for the easiness of freeplane... There certainly could be other options, but none of them got "under my skin" as freeplane - its a personal tool to me, one...
