You can work around this by adding "-charset filename=utf8" to the exiftool arguments. At least, this worked for me with French accented characters and German umlauts.

Generally, ncidd and ncid work very fine and it's a great software. Finally found a use for my 10-yr old Mac Mini and an old Apple Modem. ncid together with a helper program I wrote alert me of an incoming calls to our home line on the iPhone.
