Not sure how this could have happened and, above all, no idea how to reproduce it. Maybe a closer look at ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old and ~/.xsession-errors.previous could shed some light? If this ever happens again, please provide all ~/.xsession-errors* files for analysis.
