is wmlive trixie what it claims to be?
Use the source! The beauty of free software is full source code availability. All questions can easily be answered by simply examining the provided source code. No need to doubt based on unfounded assumptions.
Unable to install wmlive 13.2 trixie
Please be aware that wmlive is to about 99% composed of original Debian/Trixie packages, and just a fraction of add-on packages is managed by ourselves. If you are experiencing issues with Xorg, then please open a bug report with the Debian Xorg package maintenance team who manage this software. Nvidia is known for not playing well with Linux in general and should therefore be generally avoided. To only use hardware that is known to work well with Linux is the best advice that can be given for aspiring...
Since i am unable to reproduce the claimed errors for the grub installation, there is nothing that can be done from my side. There is no missing firmware after installation is complete. All available Debian firmware packages are already included in the squashfs that is used for the installation to disk. So if there are still firmware related issues after installation, maybe your hardware is simply not yet compatible with the installed system version. Maybe you are better served with another distribution...
Hi Rade, thanks for the very helpful debug logs! Apparently, the debian-installer tries to initially load some firmware files but which are not available at this time. While the firmware files are readily available in the squashfs image, they are not during installation time. This may change for the next release by including the firmware binaries also during installation time, but it will increase the ISO image size by yet another 250MB. In case you build the ISO image yourself, set the parameter...

Once the system installation succeeds, please run the command wmlive-debug as root and provide the resulting /tmp/wmlive_debug.tar.gz file for further analysis.
Thanks for providing the menu.hook file. It doesn't appear to contain any showstopper. The error message regarding WMReadPropListFromFile can be considered harmless.
WM Live Trixie AMD64 install - dock config amnesia.
Set bug report to pending until requested log files are provided.
This here provides an interesting hint: /usr/libexec/WindowMaker/wmaker(WMReadPropListFromFile(proplist.c:1560)): warning: syntax error in file /home/brian/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu.hook, line 1: extra data after end of property list Could you provide a copy of /home/brian/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu.hook for closer inspection?
Not sure how this could have happened and, above all, no idea how to reproduce it. Maybe a closer look at ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old and ~/.xsession-errors.previous could shed some light? If this ever happens again, please provide all ~/.xsession-errors* files for analysis.
Unable to install WM Live 13.
Closing this bug report as resolved.

I am not aware of any special forum. Since wmlive basically is just plain Debian underneath, i'd suggest to check out https://forums.debian.net for any questions.
Hi Brian, assuming a typo and that you actually meant WPrefs.app: The 'Applications +' sub menu is an externally generated menu and its content can't be edited with WPrefs. This external menu's file path is '~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu.hook', as can be seen in the WPrefs Application menu definition panel when highlighting 'Applications +' in the root menu representation. This external menu is automatically generated from menu files located in /etc/menu/. These menu files are managed by the...
Thanks Brian, that information clears up the missing details. So the system involved is a HUAWEI PUM-WDX9-PCB-B1 M1010 with an AMD Ryzen CPU and the wmlive variant used for installation is the amd64 one. The included /var/log/installer/syslog entries suggest this machine uses Realtek network devices, for which no matching firmware can be found and loaded during installation, because they are not included with the installer. Only after system installation is complete this firmware becomes available,...
Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback! On what type/brand/model of hardware did you try to install which variant of wmlive? On the installed system, please run the command wmlive-debug as root and send me the resulting /tmp/wmlive_debug.tar.gz file by mail (for privacy reasons) for further analysis. Thanks
Hi Martin, here is something that might be of interest to you: https://ko-fi.com/wmlive/goal?g=1 Thanks for your interest and support! Regards
First a last bookworm based version will still be released sometime in autumn after summer is over. There really is no hurry switching to trixie before at least the first point release has become available. Considering all the changes in trixie, probably lots of time intensive (re)building and (re)testing will be required. Free time is scarce and the most important ingredient. If ever a trixie based variant becomes reality, don't expect any shiny new stuff. It will largely stay the same as it is...
Hi Martin, wmlive almost exclusively relies on vanilla Debian packages and the related official Debian Installer infrastructure. Please open a wish list bug for the Linux kernel at https://packages.debian.org/linux for any feature requests. Regards
Dear Accnet Dev, please acquaint yourself with relevant networking documentation and try to figure out a solution yourself for your specific configuration. Due to the lack of financial support for my time investment, unpaid time is reserved for working on wmlive development itself. Regards
Hello Gustavius, sorry, i can't afford investing unpaid time in installation hand holding for newbie users. Also, given the lack of provided technical details, there is no way to provide any initial support. To begin with, you'd need to detail the exact HP laptop model and the ISO variant you tried to install it with. If it is a very recent/new HP laptop, maybe it's already too new for the current wmlive? May i suggest to try another more recent beginner friendly Linux distro instead?
Apparently, there exists a wmtrash dockapp for WindowMaker, but it is not included with wmlive and won't be due to its rather limited usefulness. Luckily, there is a dockable trash application integrated with the GWorkspace.app file manager. It can be easily invoked from within GWorkspace's menu "Tools > Show Recycler", or opened directly as /usr/bin/Recycler.

Glad it now works for you!

So you actually burned a DVD from the ISO? In order to exclude a faulty DVD, please rather create a bootable USB pen drive as explained in the INSTALL.txt and then use it booting into the live session again. Thanks

Are you able to switch to a virtual console pressing for example Ctr-Alt-F5 and then login? If yes, please switch to root using the command 'sudo su -' and provide a compressed/zipped copy of the /var/log/installer folder, the /var/log/syslog and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log files. Thanks
I'm now starting to suspect something completely different: The very first login into a new account usually takes a while due to desktop settings being initialized. On a very slow machine this might take an irritatingly long time, as it just shows a blank (=black) screen until it finishes and the desktop appears. Once completed, subsequent future logins should happen almost instantly. Could this be the case for you?
Hi Rade, with the scarce information provided there is not much to look into. As a bare minimum, please specify in more technical detail what are the exact models of the two "dell laptops" inolved. BIOS or UEFI? What CPU generation are they? What kind of graphics chip? When booting the machine, do you see any initial console messages before switching to graphics mode? Any difference when removing the vga=788 boot parameter? Without sufficient technical details there really is not much that can be...

Not sure what 'pacman' refers to? But whatever you intend to do, just do it. The sources for wmlive are readily available for any user's own endeavours.
To be honest, new Linux users would probably be better served with something like MXLinux or maybe even Ubuntu. With wmlive you will have a much steeper learning curve as there is no support documentation nor any wiki or mailing list whatsoever. Both MXLinux and Ubuntu are very much better in this regard.
Yes, either way should work as expected.
An updated wmlive-utils package has been made available and can now be upgraded via the usual apt procedures. Obviously, this won't magically alter the contents of the available ISO images. But you can always recreate the ISO image with more recent packages following the procedure outlined in /usr/local/src/README_wmlive-sources.txt if properly installed to disk.
The blame for this supposedly goes to systemd: [root]~ # dpkg -S /sbin/shutdown systemd-sysv: /sbin/shutdown The systemd based shutdown defaults to a so called soft-reboot instead of the expected behaviour and simply reloads the kernel, replacing it's running instance with a fresher/newer one. Rather annoying if just a reboot to a different OS was intended. See https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/02/systemd_254/ for a nice take on this "enhancement". Assuming you use 'Session Menu > Shutdown > Reboot',...
Hi Daniel, i fail to see which wording of mine might have caused you to misread my reply as being snarky. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder": I guess the same applies to perceived snarkyness on the recipient's side. The mere fact someone bothers to invest his precious time to write up and submit an error description obviously allows for the assumption that a helpful return is expected. Unfortunately, the story provided by an "anecdotal, but replicable WiFi issue" is not replicable at all if no...
Hi Daniel, no income whatsoever is generated by this project and donations so far amount to just zero. Unpaid time is limited and therefore none can be invested into any user support, sorry for that. WindowMaker Live is indeed (almost) just good old Debian with some configuration, scripting, and custom packages added on top. But if it breaks you have to just keep the pieces and fix it yourself. Given your rather anecdotical narrative without sufficient technical details it appears as if you didn't...
See http://www.windowmaker.org/dev/ for more details.
Hello Alex D, this distribution is basically nothing more than just Debian. The only difference to other Debian variants consists in being constructed around and optimized for Window Maker as its default user interface and mostly using command line utilities suitable for system administrators rather than just users. Other than that this is just plain Debian. If you experience any issue with software such as Libre Office, which like many other packages is deliberately not delivered with wmlive, then...
