Thanks for your answer, sorry Source Forge didn't subscribe me to the thread so I didn't get your response. OK, so they are valid self-signatures and its not a UI problem, its just something Enigmail shows that gpg doesn't. This isn't my key, but someone elses for reference.
Not posting this as a bug in case its some broken local configuration somehow - I've started to look into Certifications for keys (hadn't paid much attention to this before), and I see lots and lots of apparent self-signatures of a key. Originally I thought they were self-signatures as they duplicated the key's fingerprint, User ID etc... however its clear now that these signatures are associated with keys I haven't imported. Editing the key with gpg and then 'check' reports '45 signatures not checked...
