Odd looking dialog. Yes @175% but this is the only application that has this mega odd dropdown. This is a standard laptop nothing special. Can it be sorted? I have fixed this. The comboboxes needed to be scaled depending on the 100/125/150/175% Windows text size setting as well as the existing scaling for the different screen resolutions. re the Black icon. It is black on black. Needs to be resolved somehow. I just hacked the icon. Looks ok when red chip. I checked it on macOS 10.5 through 10.15...

I thought apple laptops could run windows programs years ago when my daughter had one. The Intel ones, yes, provided you want to pay for Microsoft Windows. The new ones coming out later this year or early next running on Apple Silicon CPUs will not run Windows unless MS releases Windows on ARM for other than their own hardware. If you got the money for a mac then why use open source software? Apart from anythign else, Apple computers last and generally hold their value. My 2007 Mac mini is still...

This is not a released version and should not be included. It's inclusion in GCB is a surprise to me as it was specifically agreed that it would not be included. I'm guessing you set the text in Windows 10 to 175% which was the only way I could mess up the display to look like your post? The icon is indeed black. The program prevents you from opening a second copy, so I'm not sure how you managed that? Indeed. There is a help file (for Windows and an Apple Help book for macOS; nothing for Linux or...

I wrote an emacs Lisp function so emacs would do syntax highlighting. It lists the GCB keywords and those from the libraries I'd been using. You can download it from https://shadow.sentry.org/~trev/gcb/gcbasic.el

There's an example in Great-Cow-BASIC-Demonstration-Sources/Vendor_Boards/Great_Cow_Basic_Demo_Board/18F25K42_ChipRange_Demonstrations/340_SPI_GLCD_with_Touch_using_ili9341.gcb It looks a little different to your pin assignments, but I haven't checked for any pinout differences between the K22 and K42 chips.

  • Trev Trev posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

I'm not sure why you think it is vague Stan. There is a table starting on p 15 headed "PIC18(L)F2XK22 PINOUT DESCRIPTIONS" which describes every pin and there is a column headed "PDIP, SOIC" which applies to your PDIP 18F25K22 chip.

The macOS version of GCB is 64 bit, but only because it has to be because Catalina dropped all support for 32 bit applications.

  • Trev Trev posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

It is hard to know how many "actual" or "real" users of GCB there are on various operating systems. The download figures are not replicated in the forum for any operating system including Windows! Someone asked about Mac users: I know of two others who use the forum (one in the UK and one in Japan). As for Linux, I know of one user in Germany. As for FreeBSD, just me I suspect. [To clarify: I use FreeBSD for most of my daily computing needs on old (pre-2012) Apple Mac minis that used to run macOS...

At least its portable :) And has been actively maintained by others since 1976 :-) It's also available in every Linux repository, FreeBSD's ports system and is a single file download for Windows and macOS. Customisation, in terms of what we're discussing, generally depends on adding/editing a single ".emacs" configuration file for menus and F-key (re-)definitions (for compiling etc with an info/errors display buffer) and a single file "gcbasic.el" for syntax highlighting. So two small text files...

It's pretty unlikely that any editor is going to work "out of the box" (ready to run, already compiled) on Linux in general because every distribution of Linux has its own ideas about what it should include (in the way of dependencies). Lately, various distributions have been removing many parts of the GTK graphics framework on which many pre-compiled GUI programs depend, in favour of the Qt graphics framework which is now the fashion. Then there's the various desktop environments and window managers,...

I have to agree with Evan - this is just too dangerous. I have experienced the problem of the device not being erased so much as only some bits being erased during the process which took a long time to track down. Yes, there have long been warnings on the Microchip offciial forums about the issue, but I'd never encountered it with the original PICkit software. The first time it bit me was with the PICkitPlus software, probably because more device families are now included or maybe I'd just been lucky...

if there is no real alternative for gcb@syn ide for win then I'll have to learn the command line stuff. You could try emacs (an editor available for Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and macOS). It will require some setup after installation. emacs is infinitely customisable, can do email, web browsing, newsgroup reading. Anyway, see https://sourceforge.net/p/gcbasic/discussion/629990/thread/53752c95/ for setting up with GCB. I use it on Windows, FreeBSD and macOS myself with GCB.

  • Trev Trev posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Try compiling a .gcb file on the command line eg $ gcbasic /K:A /A:GCASM test.gcb If you haven't setup your path to gcbasic, you will need to use the fill path in front of gcbasic or change to the directory in which gcbasic is installed and prefix gcbasic with ./ so ./gcbasic ...

  • Trev Trev posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

As I alluded previously, no one GCB Linux installation is going to work on all possible Linux distributions because of dependancies. That said, if users of the relevant Linux distributions care to put in the ongoing effort to produce an installation that works, I'm sure Evan would include it. If there are no Linux users willing to do this, then it will not happen. While I am not a Linux user, I did manage to successfully compile and install GCB on Ubuntu using the installation script which is currently...

  • Trev Trev posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

I have used the instructions from the Help to install GCB on an Ubuntu Linux cloud server - there was only one issue: the particular version of Ubuntu needed an additional library installed first. Looking at my notes, it was the ncurses-dev library or the compilation failed with the linker complaining -lncurses cannot be found.

  • Trev Trev posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

The info is there so why no compiled for linux installation availiable. I imagine it is because there are so many different versions of Linux. mac os seems to work easier or does it? Indeed it does. I provide a graphical installer of a pre-compiled macOS GCB binary to Evan for releases. See: https://sourceforge.net/p/gcbasic/discussion/579125/thread/10077cd8b6/

As Catalina has moved the system files to a read-only system volume, installers can no longer install to the system volume. Pre-Catalina users can do so. As the installer package suggests already, choose the "Install for me only" option and it will successfully install to your home directory. Given that many users are not moving to Catalina for various reasons chief among which is the dropping of all support to run 32 bit applications and, perhaps even more importantly, drivers (eg scanners, printers...

Neat. (The installer package suggests choosing the "Install for me only" option which installs in the home directory.) I notice that it opens two terminalwindows when run. Every run after the first it opens another terminal window. Can you eliminate the second window? And re-use the already open window for the next run?

Learning c is not easy. Learning basic is easier??? Learning C is relatively easy unless you are programming in Windows. I programmed a lot of C in DOS and various UNIX flavours, but failed miserably doing the same with Windows... until I discovered Delphi v1.00 in 1995 which really made it a trivial exercise to program in Pascal in Windows. Today you can substitute Lazarus (IDE, cross-platform graphical components) and the Free Pascal Compiler for Delphi and program graphical applications in Windows,...
