Root not working

I keep running up against this issue in recent tails. I have a Veracrypt USB volume, that works fine in other machines When I plug it into tails I get "Error unlocking ...:failed to load device's parameters: invalid argument I note its not asking me for admin credentials - but cant recall at what point it did this when it was working I have rebuilt the veracrypt USB, and rebuilt the TAILS USB image. It just wont work for me. Suggestions?
