    I added a bunch more moves, closer to the situation at the time of the crash, but it didn't crash, so is still not identical with the game that caused the crash. It looks like the failed assertion is the root cause of the problem. As you can tell from the position, in some variations pawn promotion is close to being on the agenda for either side, which might be relevant to the assertion sq < 64. I wish I could remember the exact variation.

    Huh! The failed installations all happened on a new System76 laptop that has since been returned as it was a miserable lemon from a hardware perspective, and I'm not all that sure of the OS either. Back to my old Lenovo Thinkpad laptop also running Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, I ran build_app.sh which succeeded and told me at the end: The Makefile configured for your system was written. Now just type "make" to compile Scid. Type "make install" to build the Scid.app. I wasn't sure if this meant first run make...
