Yes, i no longer have the file, because i forgot to set up version control, but i did capture a screenshot while i was discussing it with someone on Discord.

I originally created this circuit by exporting my schematic i had drawn in Kicad. I manually edited the footprints in the exported netlist file until Vero would no longer complain on import. Anyway since R1 is the first component in that file, it stands to reason that it's the first component created. There's two dozen components on this board, and for the first in particular to be affected, odds are it's not entirely accidental. Thanks for recovery advice. I backed up the history files in the process of reporting the issue, but by this time there was no history state left that precedes the R1 disappearing.

I didn't notice when it happened, but there R1 resistor became invisible and ineditable, but some remnants of it are still here. It looks like the only recovery from here is to remake the board entirely, since the save file is not a human-legible format, which BTW is unfortunate IMO. There have been no software crashes or otherwise immediately obvious issues. I was switching vis modes quite a bit and exporting PDF and PNG, and added and deleted a TO92 component several times around the time when...
