I'm not sure why you are testing a two drive sync. Truth be told, I was tired and merely wanted to verify if the synchronization would function at all. But in all seriousness, I performed this test to eliminate the possibility of hardware errors related to cables or controllers before proceeding further. This gave me a sense of relief. I'll try moving the two drives to the psu not powering the cpu to see if that changes anything. So, I transferred the two drives that were causing the 21-error to...

Almost time for bed, but I did a quick test just now: I made a new conf file that only consist of the two drives currently causing me trouble. I'm almost done running a full sync on those without any errors at all. So, running Snapraid on two drives works just fine - running on 20 drives does not on my current setup. And apparently no hw errors on the controller or cables, or this test-sync should've failed as well, right? This has to be a psu issue for me as well. But I'm running two psu's! I'll...

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I implemented several methods to spin up the drives, including copying a file to each one before attempting to sync, but none were successful. Notably, all drives appear healthy according to various diagnostic tools. My next course of action is to relocate the problematic drives to different SATA cables and/or controllers to isolate any potential hardware-related issues within my system.

Sorry for the late response. Happy to hear that at new PSU solved your issues, @tsunamijhoe. For me, not so much. I found an old 500W PSU I had laying around and hooked half my drives to this, the other half to my existing 650W PSU, but to no avail. I'm now running approx. 20 drives with a total of 1150W, which should be more than enough. But I still get those pesky Unexpected Windows error 21 -error while running a sync, scrub or whatever, and now out of options as to what to try next. @amadvance,...

Sure, I don't like to throw money at problems myself. But in this case it's only like $40 for a used PSU. An amount well spent if it turns out to actually solve this problem as I find Snapraid truly excellent for my use. And if turns out not to have any effect at all, I'll just put the PSU on a shelf as a backup if my main PSU should suddenly stop working. I'll keep you posted.

While I haven't solved the "Windows fatal error 21" issue myself (which is precisely why I found your post!), your experience resonates deeply. My setup is similar, with a 650W PSU powering 20 data drives and 3 parity drives. Coincidentally, the error frequency has increased after adding a few drives recently. I recently conducted a test that might be relevant. I made a copy of my Snapraid folder and modified the conf file to only include a single folder on one of the drives responsible for the 21-error...
