check if these are also installed, but think they should already be there.. qt5ct qt5-style-plugins then log out and when back in open qt5 settings and change the style in first tab to gtk2, also match the fonts in there to the default system fonts so the qt programs dont look weird.
in session and startup try this command for your xDaily, once its done it wont auto close but it should work. xfce4-terminal -H -x sudo xDaily
A lot of the channels in the Internet-Radio directories either wont display or work, for example i had a lot in the Trance section and now its blank. For some reason some of them are now in the Dance section. A while back there was nothing displaying at all, now i have partial results. Dont know if its an issue with streamtuner or IR just reorganising their links. Heres a screenshot showing trance channels in the Dance section.
Try this command below then once installed, open your file manager depending on desktop and check that devices are set to automount or browse once plugged in. in nemo for example.. edit > plugins > behaviour > media handling. in thunar edit > preferences > advanced > volume management > configure > removable storage sudo apt install pmount usbmuxd gvfs gvfs-fuse gvfs-backends
ive been tethering my android phones over usb, works fine although speed is a bit slower than regular wifi. stable to the point i rarely ever use the ethernet cable which i keep for large downloads.
Here's the wallpapers from the original design folder i had for 11 https://www.4shared.com/s/fuakSQX6hku
Heres a way to launch xDaily from the menu using menu actions if you dont want to use the panel shortcut: Right click on your whiskermenu and select Properties. In the properties options click on the Search Actions tab. In there you should see a few custom actions, but on the top right click on + to create a new action. Click on the new action you just created and you will have 3 options to fill under Details, here are what i used Name: xDaily Pattern: xd Command: exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator...
i have the 64 loaded iso up here if anyone wants it https://www.mediafire.com/file/8t19zvzd4we2c3o/PeppermintOS-Debian-64_loaded.iso/file
i would have random system lock ups but what fixed it for me was increasing the performance of my nvidia drivers. in my case i had to go into the nvidia settings then in opengl settings increase the image settings to full. no more freezing and games work a bit better too.
do you a link to the iso, found one but it looks like a standard pep install with the usual xfce and pep tools.
ive a load of peppermint wallpapers, if there's anything specific just ask. still using them on my own install
grab the latest one from here and see if it installs, i remember having to do this a while back. if you dont fancy using the terminal install youtubedl-gui and itll pull in all the needed dependencies https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/debian/pool/main/y/yt-dlp/
install pmount and usbmuxd, theres also a package called gvfs backends or something like that, once they're installed open nemo and there's and option in advanced settings to auto browse and mount external drives or usbs.
edited an old wallpaper which i darkened down to fit the marwaita theme. havent done much in the way of image editing lately.
install qt5 style settings and qt5ct, reboot then the qt5 settings should work when you set it to gtk.
just installed classic on an old pentium 4 machine which replaced crunchbang++, wanted to put regular pep but the installer gave an error about some ip not found. classic installed fine though, ill get around to setting up the applications i need later.
not sure if its a limitation of the live environment but i cannot set an irish keyboard layout that will apply, as you can in the screeshot its installed with the uk one but the us is still active even after logging out and back in.
tried it, forgot about that hybrid setup on 10 now that im used to pure xfce. would take a while to get used to it again. i see vindsl modified the wallpaper, i actually have a proper red version i can upload on my flickr acct if you want it. ntp support and the xfce4-goodies are missing in the live mode anyway, for fixing the time and panel widgets. not sure if i could go back to the hybrid desktop but im sure many would prefer it if they havent upgraded from 10 yet. prebuild iso will definitely...
try this command and see if it helps sudo apt install pmount usbmuxd gvfs gvfs-fuse gvfs-backends
dont remember the font name offhand but i found an exact copy back in 2020 and have it saved somewhere. i used it to rebuild the 2016 version and swap out the flat candy logo with the 3d version. saved the updated version to a png which is much easier to use because i had to modify the font to add the spike on the P. the only thing i dont have is the actual font for the original 2013 logo but have a rendered version of it which the current logo design is based off. theres a font called comfortaa...
the hub mostly works thanks to the previous help, just not the update part in it. ive being using the package-update-indicator updater which automatically scans after login anyway so alls good. not having any trouble updating either.
When i run sudo xDaily in the past it would go through the check list but as part of that it would sync with codeberg and pull down icons, wallpapers etc if it needed. Just noticed mine isnt doing that anymore but works fine otherwise. Is this intentional or not, only reason i decided to check it was because i saw people had issues connecting to the update servers. The update manager in the hub doesnt work either, but not surprised since all the previous hassle i had with trying to fix my hub version....
go to the location the flatpak is in, open it in terminal then ls sudo flatpak install ch.x29a.playitslowly.flatpakref that should get it installed, if not then try installing it with gnome software.
sweet, must update the ventoy isos anyway. for some reason sourceforge speeds for acoros are dog slow so i got it from the website instead.
just installed it was easy enough heres what i did: download the source tar to desktop (i downloaded 1.5.1) extracted the folder to desktop open the folder then right click and open in terminal ls (to list files when in terminal) ./install.sh enter password note: id recommend using another home folder other than the desktop before installing as the file will link to it later in the menu. also it works perfect but looked nothing like the screenshot on its page, just had a slider and button only version....

The capital N in nemo when opened is probably down to a visual preference, but most executables ive seen are all lower case apart from the likes of NetworkManager.
for me its quicker to reinstall than attempt to fix or rescue the system, but i have spare installs on other drives i can fire up at any time.
i dont bother with os backups nowadays, i just use grsync to copy the user folder data over to a second drive on the system and reinstall when needed. if its a laptop ill use an external drive as a temporary location.
i ran dual monitors on debian before, worked fine but i had 2 different size ones. used lxrandr to set the layout and had a blurred wallpaper to span across both because it looked weird in 2 resolutions. because of my setup and space restrictions its easier for me to run single monitor. hardest part of it was getting the right nvidia driver and setting it up.
peppermint used to be like mint except it used a lighter desktop and was setup to be easy to use, since it was lubuntu based it had all the usual stuff people might want in the repos. lxde was eventually phased out when mark took over and xfce elements became more common whereas lubuntu went lxqt instead. i used to switch between the 2 since pep 4. nowadays its a more minimal setup under debian but you add what you need to it.
its happening to me occasionally but mostly when discord is being used and i go to play a youtube video for example. my machine isnt particularly powerful (core 2 quad) but it has 8gb of ram. im putting it down to the video card being stressed out and locking something up.
ive had issues on bookworm where usb soundcards dont get recognised even though they power up on usb. sometimes they work fine and others only after a reboot. behringer interfaces seems the most reliable on linux. audacity just wont play anything either, itll record only. ive had to use reaper as my audio editor instead.
Cmus, i can load up my entire playlist into it and find tracks in seconds even if i have a partial filename i can remember. plus being all text based i can skin it to match a theme im using. the only feature it lacks is crossfade but i can use audacious if i need it. Gimp, because i use it for all my graphics stuff Mixxx for djing and creating mashup ideas Reaper for audio editing and creating mashups of tracks. Yt-dlp for ripping videos or for audio samples i might extract later in reaper. Soundconverter...
heres one i knocked up, in blue as requested. its similar to one of my old designs. You can download the 4k version from the flickr link below. Attached a tiny preview to give you a quick glimpse of it https://flic.kr/p/2pcNFJt
yeah sure can whip up something when i have some free time, in the meantime i just need to know which shade of blue using gimps colour picker, post the code here. also is it the italic bold font or the current original type one. heres a quick colour rotated version of an old one of mine to give you an example.
yeah, made the wallpaper, menu button and the settings one. font is called expansiva, you can download here https://www.dafont.com/expansiva.font
xfce mostly but with a custom layout, jwm or openbox as a backup themes, usually mate-themes, arc and materia-gtk icons, obsidian, faenza black or paper heres todays setup
ive been thinking of setting up an openbox version but have it setup like a complete desktop application wise and use launchers instead of the openbox menu along with a dock. ive put it into place on an ubuntu base where it worked quite well but would be even better on debian due not having to work around snapd. also tried a fluxbox version but it didnt work great though. This was a preview of the ubuntu version
you could also try setting up and changing your locale by typing these commands below; sudo apt install locales sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales then add your desired location. just change the order you want them in if you need to have more than one, it might change the language or keyboard layout too so youll have to play with it. i rarely ever have to use it unless im not using an english based distro.
install ntpsec-ntpdate then reboot, that should sort it. myself and someone else have run into this already.
i only have the iso for Peppermint10 64bit, can make it available to download if you want it. deleted all my other isos a while back, maybe try a torrent tracker site they might have them.
doing the upgrade route is a bit of a trek to try fix as ive found out for myself, ive mostly fixed the system but took a fair bit of tinkering with it. id recommend waiting for a proper upgrade fix as long as the current install runs away fine.
good to know thanks :)
..
kumo works in terminal and when typed into whisker menu, just not from the hub.
But one last thing: to update the operating system and therefore the apps, isn't there something automatic (like linux-mint) that tells you that you need to update? Do you have to do it manually? Every time you log in? package indicator should take care of that, just copy the command below into your terminal. if you want to change its preferences type Up into the menu. it should be already set to start at login but you mightnt see it until you reboot or logout. sudo apt install package-update-in...
tried that, didnt work. instead i ran into my old kumo bug where it tries to launch ddcopy, did the commands you gave in that thread but it brings up a python error when i try to install favicon via pip. also installed python3-full and no joy. heres what it shows. rayzer@peppermint:/opt/pypep$ sudo pip install favicon [sudo] password for rayzer: error: externally-managed-environment × This environment is externally managed ╰─> To install Python packages system-wide, try apt install python3-xyz, where...
Was trying to get my head around this one for a while but eventually found a command that will let you post the output of inxi -Fxz in a launcher where it will stay on the screen. I know the pep hub uses neofetch as an alternative. Just create a launcher whether in a multi launcher, desktop or panel and use this command. It might display an error first time but after that it will work normally. xfce4-terminal -H -x inxi -Fxz
im on bookworm via upgrading, on the good note the hub is working but kumo isnt. tbh im not worried about that for now, might come back to it some other time. Thanks for the help :)
yeah im on bookworm via upgrade, that fixed it, everything seems to be working now. just ran sudo xDaily too to try pull back down anything i mightve missed. would be handy to make a bash script of it for anyone else that has run into the same issue as myself.

Since i broke the hub sudo xDaily doesnt seem to do anything except install the regular apt packages, so im wondering how to just remove them. Poking around the file system i can see some locations like opt/pypep and in .local but how can i clean out the lot in one go. Or can i just purge all the old config and install a new version via deb or whatever.
software and updates and the drivers app are part of the software-properties-gtk packages which i believe is only designed to work on ubuntu, i get an error message when trying to run it in terminal so i just removed it altogether. ive just use sudo xDaily or the update dist-upgrade commands.
pick whichever one you feel like, if you want to use a window manager instead of xfce then plain debian would be the better option. i use pep for mini xfce build, solydx for a lazy install and tried crunchbang++ recently so i could do a quick openbox install. if i need to add to it i just modify my build script i use across debian and ubuntu
had this issue the other day on crunchbang and wattos, had to also install ntpsec-ntpdate then reboot and it updated the time itself.
if you just want one button that gives you multiple options add the action buttons to the panel then right click it and in its properties change the view to action buttons then make sure only log out... is selected. when you click it it will give you the option to log out, reboot shutdown etc.
try modifying the shortcut instead of deleting it, something like super+z for example.
open keyboard from the menu and in there click on application shortcuts. in the list search for xfce4-popup-whiskermenu, click on it then press edit underneath. assign a new shortcut for whisker.
My desktop is constantly evolving, went away from the pep branding so trying to find a setup to replace it. Back to the red for today..
My desktop is constantly evolving, went away from the pep branding so trying to find a setup to replace it. Back to the red for today anway..
i did the upgrade a while back, it breaks some peppermint stuff but works fine otherwise. bookworm base has been solid so far, running it on 4 different installs across multiple distros.
on some distros i use Super+z when i run it in a vm because it tries to trigger both vm and host menus
acoros is a nice distro and it gets updated quite regularly. its one of the few debian distros i keep an eye on. manuel is also helpful when it comes to issues, would recommend checking it out.
there has been some issues with kumo, ive been using ice instead. do a forum search to check out other threads related to it. regarding the plank issue, open session and startup from the menu and add it under application autostart. the command to the launcher should be /usr/bin/plank
while redesigning some custom themes i made a panel background which matches the dark marwaita theme. just change to image then import this one below. have a number of black gradient versions too.
Made an updated xDaily icon along with a slight Kumo revamp both of which are non pep branded, was also trying to do a new pephub icon but ill attach what i did anyway. Let me know what you think
any update on the pephub fix, still nothing here. dont really want to reinstall peppermint as everything else is perfect by the looks of things. things like the new splash screen etc still havent come down either although xDaily appears to be doing something.
speaking of repos, i dont have this one on my install since the upgrade to bookworm. is it a new thing i need to add?
good to know, thanks. i guess ill have to wait for the pephub fix too. all working ok otherwise for now :)
theres no file in that sources.list.d folder other than my brave browser release list, im not too pushed about the pephub to be honest as i rarely use it anyway. having used bookworm a bit more and after fixing the other issues its running pretty sweet now. if you have an update on the way ill just wait for it :) another thing i noticed are the splash screens are missing, and debians one are in their place, again nothing urgent, i might just put a temporary one in there for now. heres a copy of my...

Hows things, yesterday i upgraded to bookworm by changing the repos and did a dist-upgrade followed by sudo xDaily after a reboot. Few things ive noticed so far.. KDE system settings appeared in the menu but when opened its broken bue to the lack of k stuff in peppermint. removing a package called systemsettings5 got rid of it. The calamares installer was left behind so had to remove calamares-settings-debian and live-tools which got rid of that. Also when i did a autoclean and autoremove it removed...

ive just completed the upgrade to bookworm, modified the sources to replace bullseye with bookworm then did a dist-upgrade. once that was done i rebooted then ran sudo xDaily. did run into some questions about keeping versions of things, just used the recommended settings.
try installing the task-japanese package and see if it helps or task-japanese-desktop for the whole desktop setup.
an easy way to sort the layout install xfce4-goodies right click the panel and select add new items > keyboard layouts. right click layouts > keyboard settings. click on layout tab then go to the keyboard layout section and add the one you want there.
what about expanding the peppermint extras to add another button/section that completes the prebuild, something like Peppermint Recommended. in it it would contain the instructions to install things prebuilt in pep10 like gimp, libroffice, vlc and so on. if you wanted a core build you basically skipped that entire section., it would be an alternative to using a bash script you had to download. otherwise add the likes of gimp etc to the suggested list.
experimenting with other themes and font choices, ties in with materia dark, faenza black and uses the exo and expansiva fonts. using cairo dock but with a simplified layout.
i found the original peppermint logo from 2013 buried on my secondary drive, with an without the candy logo. here it is in svg format if you want a copy of it. not sure what font was used but looks similar to the remade one.
works fine for me, use it a lot
https://sourceforge.net/p/peppermintos/pepos/announcements/thread/c0a4411d2b/
regarding the distro name try running xDaily on the peppermint hub or else run sudo xDaily in terminal
that fixed it, might have unknowingly removed it purging some other packages.
tried that and this is what i got.. rayzer@peppermint:/opt/pypep$ sudo python3 pepkumo.py [sudo] password for rayzer: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/opt/pypep/pepkumo.py", line 17, in <module> import favicon ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'favicon' rayzer@peppermint:/opt/pypep$ also tried removing ddcopy, the popup changes from opening ddcopy to python3 but kumo doesnt work. ran sudo xdaily and still the same too.

Have yet another issue with Kumo, i have a usb burning program called ddCopy installed and when i click on the kumo icon it asks for a password to launch ddcopy instead. if i enter the password neither program launches & kumo just doesnt work at all now. i can use ice instead but found it to be a weird bug.
rayzer@peppermint:~$ systemd-analyze Startup finished in 7.174s (kernel) + 30.678s (userspace) = 37.852s graphical.target reached after 27.684s in userspace rayzer@peppermint:~$ this is my current desktop, has a HDD, 8gb ram and a core 2 quad in it but has one or 2 extra things added to boot. are you saving the session when going to shut down, click the power button on the whisker menu and uncheck save session for future logins. i find that can cause trouble sometimes.
i use brave or chromium, havent had issues with either. would recommend installing qt5-style-plugins and qt5ct just to make sure the libraries needed are available. last time i tried falkon it was a pain even on the plasma desktop. sounds like your issue might be a power manager or screensaver problem though.
heres a screenshot of yt-dlp
yt-dlp its a terminal based one and simple to use. once installed open your terminal then type yt-dlp followed by the video link for example yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
i use yt-dlp, once installed type yt-dlp and the link to the video into the terminal
If you want to get away from the peppermint red scheme this is a colour overlay of the red theme, meant to tie in with the default adwaita theme. can be paired with icon sets like obsidian, papirus, peppermix or the gnome color icons.
ive been making add on graphics for the new light and dark theme, thinking about doing more for other themes like arc, blackmate etc. for now its just something i wanted to test out and if anyone else fancied giving it a go too.
not sure if anyone still uses gpicview but if the view settings in ristretto that comes with xfce are changed you can get a more simplified look like gpicview making it more or less redundant. if you want to try it yourself open ristretto with any image then under view disable the first 3 options.
never heard of onboard but glad you found something that worked, strange how you didnt find florence though because its working fine here. id also recommend looking at gucharmap if its still available, its handy for grabbing symbols from other languages
which version of peppermint are you using? the current debian or the old ubuntu one. just tried installing it using synaptic and it worked perfect, theres also matchbox-keyboard if you want to give that a try instead.
one thing ive noticed with the new theme, if you change the panel look or height in the preferences a red line appears along the edge and you need to run xfce4-panel -r to reset and make it disappear.
if you can get hold of an external usb keyboard install florence sudo apt install florence then open session and startup from the menu click the + button to add a new entry then add florence as the name & command and have it trigger on login. then reboot to test it out.
playing around with some possible new designs
