It's probably nothing specific to a map, most likely a perf regression in JVM for macOS :( I tried with the mind map for Help - Documentation, expanded to 2 levels and it's the same thing, see video I recorded, first scrolling around in 1.8.8 and then switch to 1.7.9, it gets visibly smoother. https://1drv.ms/v/s!AruzHlYxs49OgawxDTVtPEiXaQl2aQ

Unfortunately it seems the same. I tested with the same large-ish mindmap, just dragging it around and seeing how frequently it draws (eyeballing it) • 1.7.9 - around 7 updates per second • 1.8.6 - around 1.4 updates per second 1.8.8 all 3 variants - around 1.3 updates per second So which JVM was 1.7.9 using?

I'm having the same experience. Earlier I actually tried running Freeplane with the JVM installed on my machine instead of the one packaged with the download and the result was slow performance as well. So the problem is with the JVM, perhaps you've changed it somehow with the 1.8 releases?
