So, I found an answer to my second question. By querying verb 0xA- (converter format): hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x6 0xa00 0x0 (have to pad 8 trailing bits with 0 due to hda-verb constant command format i.e. verb size), I get confirmation that the card is really sending out the expected sample rate and bit format.
