Thank you for your comment and sorry for my delay to reply. Your explanation is very kind and clear, but the automatic dot correction (smoothing, randomization, etc) is exactly what I want to turn off. I'm not familiar with the inner mechanism inside GIMP and gutenprint (and CUPS?). As far as I understand, GIMP is a raster graphics editor, and gutenprint is a collection of printer drivers. What's the relationship between gutenprint and CUPS? Is there any way to bypass the automatic correction and...

By "checkerboard", I mean: dot blank dot blank ... O~O~O~O~O~O~ ~O~O~O~O~O~O~ O~O~O~O~O~O~ ~O~O~O~O~O~O~ etc. In the worst case scenario, the driver simply recognizes it as "gray", and generates a completely different pattern (whatever they think is beautiful :-) on paper.

Thanks for your reply. By "dot perfect", I mean this: if I have a 300x300 BW image of, say, a checkerboard, I should get the exact checkerboard pattern of 1 inch by 1 inch on paper by printing at 300dpi; 0.5 inch by 0.5 inch at 600dpi, and so on. What I mean by "tweaking" is that the printer driver supplied by the manufacturer usually does something automatic in between the input image information and the inkjet output operation, so that the smoothing and/or dithering etc. are unavoidable and cannot...

Hi, Sorry for the multi-posting (I first tried Open Discussion in vain). I have a newbie question. Is it possible to do raster printing dot by dot (dot perfect)? My understanding is that, nowadays, it is generally not possible because the printer driver (Windows etc) always tweaks the original image during printing. But I badly need it to print my computer-generated holograms (with lasers and/or inkjets, e.g., EPSON, Brother, etc.). The dot size doesn't have to be the finest possible. For example,...

Hi, I have a newbie question. Might be a devel stuff, but I'll try here first. Is it possible to do raster printing dot by dot (dot perfect)?
