It might be possible to use a piece of hardware from midi solutions with this. they make boxes that will convert and incoming MIDI signal to a different MIDI signal. they also do a few other things. I've used one to pervert the MIDI output of an electronic whammy bar that did not offer the output I need, But it did put out something I could work with. I used the event processor. It might be possible to put an event processor between your MIDI controller and the GR, and let it randomize or maybe cycle...
Frustrating, isn't it? That's one of the reasons I swapped my GR-55, purchased new, for an old used VG-99 to use as a backup to my first one. There were a few other things I didn't like about the GR, but it really galled me to know that a powerful synthesizer was right there, taking up space, useless.
