Yes, after I already submitted this, I found the command log. I regret making this request. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to delete it. Anyway, you said, "I believe in Stata the command echo also does not appear at the prompt where a user enters commands, right?" So I just opened up Stata to check, and you're right. The commands run from the GUI are echoed in the command log immediately above the command line. It's funny how when a UI is good enough, you don't even notice it or remember where anything...
Okay, sorry, I'm stupid. After I closed Gretl, it asked me if I wanted to save the log of all my commands, so I thought, "Wait a second, so it HAS been logging all my commands?" So I closed and reopened Gretl and searched for the log. Then I found the command log. Somehow, I had managed to find everything but the command log. Derp. Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
Also, having the corresponding command appear in the console is useful when one is performing a command with relatively complex parameters that are easier to set up in the GUI. When the corresponding command appears in the console, one copies and pastes it into a script to use later. For example, in Stata, I often get tripped on the reshape command. It's hard to specify the parameters correctly, so I often end up setting up my reshape in the GUI, and then, when I see the resulting command in the...

Before I encrypted anything, upon booting my computer, Grub would give me a boot list, to choose between Windows and Linux. Nice and...
