As Jeff said, use Password Safe in Windows to reconcile two files. But I'm leery of usIng the merge operation in case it results in what happened to you. Here's another way, but it can be tedious if you have a lot of entries to deal with: You can start two Password Safe instances, and open one of the two files you want to reconcile in each instance. (If you can't run two instances of PWS, make sure that feature is checked as allowed in the options.) You can drag an entry from one database file to...
Look for "PasswdSafe" and "PasswdSafe Sync" for Android (missing the "or" in "word." -------- Original message --------From: Ulrich Boche boche@users.sourceforge.net Date: 8/27/23 1:27 PM (GMT-07:00) To: "[passwordsafe:discussion]" 134800@discussion.passwordsafe.p.re.sourceforge.net Subject: [passwordsafe:discussion] Where PasswordSafe files are stored on Android On Android, there is also a PasswordSafe Sync app that you can install that synchronizes a PasswordSafe database on Dropbox or OneDrive...
Just my two cents for workaround for a couple of things:1. Rather than using a complete website address for title, doesn't it make sense to use the primary website name? There is a field specifically for the URL. (However, I've had no problem using, let's say Amazon.com in a title. But I don't know about CSV import/export ramifications.)2. For entries containing only some info, I use a period (dot) as password placeholder. (But why wouldn't you have a complete entry for a credit card with bank account...
If you keep the database file on OneDrive and use Password Safe on the PC and PasswdSafe (with companion app PasswdSafe Sync) on Android, it will stay accurately updated no matter which platform is used to edit it. Whenever the database file is open and editable, the platform app will create a temporary file with extension .plk. If the database file is open on both platforms with ongoing edits at the same time, you may have more than one .plk file which will probably trigger creating a separate database...
Glad your manual method of getting the PWS data file from Windows to your Android device using Bluetooth and changing the file extension is working for you. But it seems rather labor intensive and impractical if you add or modify entries in the file in both Windows and Android and you want to keep one file synced.
For window size in MS Windows, try dragging the edges to the size you want. Then, select File/Exit (important step; don't just click on the window corner "X"). That should save the window size and position parameters. For font size in the PWS window, select View/Change Font and pick what you want. (I usually use Calibri regular 16.)
Strange, indeed. Sounds like the database file is good based on working on tablet and phone, which I assume are different OSs than the PC, thus, different animals. So your "Open with" dialogue box shows both MS Edge and PWS. Is PWS the default program ("Always open with")?
If I was having the issue, I would try PWS on another PC to see if the same behavior exists. (incidentally, I do use a PWS regular installation on all computers .) Also, have you tried a regular installation on your computer to see if you have the same problem as your "green" portable installation? Since PWS (and you've tried several versions) is malfunctioning on your main PC, that defective software interface must be tied to the current PC. You would be able to compare the applicable differences...
If there's no problem on another PC, then you can rule out PWS for yourself and focus on your primary PC OS (or other software) issues to resolve. (About explorer refresh: It may not help fix the problem, but for clarification, what I meant was that the double-click action is probably initiating a process that deletes the file(s) and almost instantly brings up an active window with the error message that the file can't be accessed -- it's not there anymore. I suspect the explorer window in the background...
Windows can delete your files by double-clicking for a lot of reasons. Since it's probably not specific to PasswordSafe, have you verified that other files (such as .jpg, .doc, .txt, etc.) open correctly with their default programs by double-clicking? (I assume that's a common method you use to open files.) If you Google something like "windows 10 double clicking deletes files," you'll get many potential fixes. I hope one will work for you. I also think that maybe the error message you are getting...

MrMe, It looks like the iOS solution you've described might be a dead end for PC/Android. The only Android app I could find that might work to directly access Veracrypt files for this purpose is EDS Lite and EDS, both by sovworks. Unfortunately, these aspects keep me from pursuing it further: (1) Rooting of the Android device might be required for the EDS apps, which is a no-go for me. It doesn't seem that Android has an ability to seamlessly link a picture or document within a Veracrypt container...
For the websites that you can paste or drag and drop the password into the field, but it won't be accepted, I've found that often what works is to add a typed "space" after pasting, then back space that back out. That simple process seems to get the website to accept the password.I've run into this a lot when making a new account. After entering a new password, I enter it in PWS, then copy and paste it back to the verify password field, where it might be greyed out until a character is typed in....

Jeff, I will certainly experiment, but would like to ask up front, does PasswdSafe Sync keep other selected files synced and on device even if they aren't PasswdSafe databases? In other words, if you can choose the file, it will keep the file synced, reasonably regardless of file format, according to your described limitations for cloud services - is that correct? Background: I'm thinking of that method to allow a companion encrypted container file to travel through cloud with the Password Safe/PasswdSafe...
MrMe, Thanks for your experiences and suggestions about being able to link documents and images to entries in an encrypted container or partition using a companion app that launches the document through the Password Safe URL field. (I've appreciated much of your detailed advice in the past.) To me, this could be a perfect solution if adding the document link to Password Safe is easy and retrieving it is seamless, such as using single-sign-on or the keychain store that you mentioned. That mechanism...
That sounds like a good solution. I wonder if there's a similar app for Android with MS compatibility that will launch documents in DriveCrypt, Veracrypt, or other encrypted containers. It doesn't look like OneDrive Vault will generate a URL for the vault or the documents in it. But there are programs that will make user-controlled encrypted space on OneDrive and other cloud services. One example is Stablebit Cloud Drive (https://stablebit.com/CloudDrive). That might generate a URL for specific files,...

I vote yes. I'd love to attach some screenshots and short documents to some entries in the Password Safe Database files. I've seen a need for years.
https://pwsafe.org/help/pwsafeEN/html/searching.html It's also described under Getting Started in Help on the top line menu or in the help file, pwsafe.chm. (Sometimes I wish the "Find" toolbar could be set to stay open - it would save one step and help prompt what to do, particularly if searches are infrequent.)
Answered my own question: Because of higher security features, the OneDrive Personal Vault doesn't have a consistently accessible file folder to save to and open from for the PasswdSafe database file. (PasswdSafe Sync doesn't even display the folder.) Other OneDrive folders work fine for the sync purpose.

I've been using Dropbox as the location for the PasswdSafe database file in order to sync among my computers and portable devices. (And I've been using PasswdSafe Sync to facilitate that.) Dropbox has worked great for this purpose, but Dropbox restricted the number of devices allowed for a free account. So I'm moving the database file to my OneDrive account for syncing across devices. My question concerns the OneDrive Personal Vault which I've yet to use. As I understand, the OneDrive Personal Vault...

The example in my post had extraneous characters Should have been "pwsafe -s (data filename)"
@Thomas Arter, sorry to chime in at this point, but I didn't notice whether you got this command-line guidance yet: if you put a shortcut in the Startup folder of the Windows Start menu for Password Safe using the "s" switch and specifying your data file, Password Safe will automatically start with Windows. Not only that, but it will minimize the icon into the system tray (notification area) just as @ThaCrip advised. (However, the safe data file will still be locked until you click on the icon and...

I just started experiencing the Dropbox file deletion confirmation when making changes to my Password Safe database file, which I have in Dropbox for use on multiple computers and other devices. (This is the standard confirmation that Dropbox issues about deleting a file everywhere when deleting with File Explorer, and you can choose to not show again or cancel. But until now, it hasn't been a factor for me with just editing Password Safe entries.) This condition appears to be the result of a more...
Great fix with v6.18.0. Now, you can just hit the keyboard <enter> or <go> key without thinking about it, and then the choice to make the file writable or not is presented. </go></enter>
Nope, that didn't keep it open. The file closed much earlier than the 1 hour setting. Sorry for the noise.
In Android Pie recent apps selection (at least on Samsung Note 8), long pressing the Passwdsafe icon and choosing "Lock this app" might work to keep Android from closing it
Great explanation about why Android will close Passwd safe after I've switched between apps even though I've set the file open time for 1 hour. I understand the problem now: that android may need the memory for other apps. I agree that it would be nice to have that noted in an FAQ, help, or other instructions. I know that some Samsung phones have a Device Maintenance or Device Care in Settings that will select apps that will sleep and never be able to run in the background. If there's a setting that...
Thanks for looking into fixing this issue. Changing to writable while the file is open would certainly work for me. Making the initial choice of writable or read only persistent for multiple successive sessions would also be a satisfactory solution, if doable.
Jeff, is it possible to set the default as “Modify” rather than “View”? Or let the user set that default? As an alternative, could the app be made to remember the last button pressed, toggle between modify and view, and continue opening the database in that mode until the opposite button is pressed? Old habits die hard, and I find it difficult to stop simply touching the “Go” or “Enter” key after the password. Then, I often wind up having to close and reopen Passwdsafe to make any changes. The normal...
Would this behavior of.plk files cause the occasional "conflicted copy" of a db file on Dropbox?
MrMe, thanks for taking the time to present these options for dealing with the Login button. I think those solutions would apply to other similar websites I've seen and perhaps to the ones Gary alluded to
This website is one example that requires you to click on a Login button before the credential fields are presented: www.usaa.com.
Agree that would be nice feature. (Passwdsafe for Android has the option to show...
