Hi, I remember a Spencer Chrysler. I still think you need to thank Joan more, but I appreciate it. :) More content will be added in the future. I don´t plan to stop working on it. The Discord community (that link should work https://discord.gg/EBCm9NGF8h) is far more active now, if you are interested.

Hi, I am an amateur programmer myself, and started with my Color Mod as a fan, when Joan Queralt stopped working on it. I am also the only active Admin now. Biogenesis is open source, and you can find the newest sourcecode of the Color Mod here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/biogenesis/files/Color%20Mod/2.0/ You can also just mod the vanilla simulation of course. If you add something substantial enough (like a new Color function, but that is only an example), I can also add your mod to the main...

This is mostly a balance update, because I did not have a PC, that worked well enough for the first half of the year, and did not work on Biogenesis. Have a good one now, runs the simulation with 800000 CO2. :) Color Mod 2.01 mainly balances photosynthesis for all plant symmetries: -Exact formula: -for 8-symmetric organisms: ((1961 + (6000 / (number of genes + 2)) + (6315 / symmetry)) * 0.0006) * segment length -for 1 to 7-symmetric organisms: ((1961.329 + (6000 / (number of genes + 2)) + (6315 /...

Color Mod 2.00 mainly adds a third substance methane (CH4) and the new color PURPLE, that can use this substance to get energy by methanotrophy. Methane (CH4) added as a new substance: -CH4 is produced by dead decaying organisms (and destroyed spores) and PINK feeding -CO2 is not produced by dead decaying organisms anymore -CH4 and CO2 turn into each other (adjustable in Parameters/World) -Can be used by methanotrophs (new color PURPLE) to generate energy -Intitial amount can be set in "Parameters"...

No new major content update again, but I won´t simulate another game until I already started to add the methanoautotrophs I mentioned earlier. Else the balance hell will surely continue. :P And it has to stop now, because it is time to add new colors. I won´t bore you with another 1.9X, except if someone really finds something game breaking. 1.97 fixes 2 bugs, adds a pop up, where you need to confirm, that you want to start a new world (people hit that button accidentally, or by hitting the space...

I was inactive for nearly two months, so this is just a balance update mostly. Changes: Fine-tuned the photosynthesis formula, so that smaller and lower symmetry organisms (but 1-symmetric ones should be weaker) are a bit more competitive than before. FOREST is slightly stronger when a plant touches only one other plant, but slightly weaker, if it touches two or more. Colonies that starve the world of all CO2 should be less common. Organisms with MAGENTA (but not consumers, that also have GRAY segments)...

Another balance update for 1.9X, mainly for spores, but non-plant FALLOW also attacks PINK again in general The performance improvement from 1.94 wasn´t as good as it can be (because of bad precision https://stackoverflow.com/questions/322749/retain-precision-with-double-in-java), and is optimized now. But there also is a new feature: -A gene can be cloned: -The new gene will be before or after the old gene. -Chance to have a cloned gene instead of a new gene is 1/8 -Length will be randomized in...

This update doesn´t change much. However an old (not really severe) bug from the vanilla version was fixed , where especially very small organisms (growth stage) repeatedly shrink and grew, even though they should not grow, because their energy did not increase. This, and the change in the code itself, also is a small performance improvement. All spores grow to the second growth stage now, making it easier for other organisms to feed on them, which should help the balance. Some values for different...

This is mostly a balance update. FALLOW has 2 new variants. One inhibits SPORE and always make them create viruses (if infected). The other makes the victim produce stillborn children, and the number that has to be produced until normal reproduction is possible again depends on FALLOW segment length. Unmodified SKY can only be attacked (forcing the shield) by WHITE plants, that aren´t consumers. Normal viruses cannot do it anymore. Organisms with MAGENTA segments are nearly safe from it. BLUE and...

Just found out, that a plant may use the "Obtained energy divisor" just once in life now, because of older optimizations, instead of once in a frame and therefore 2560 times, if it lives for just 10 time units. xD Well, the simulation runs faster again now. Hoping for less viruses in the real world and more viruses (types) in Biogenesis for 2021... Would be a good tradeoff, I think. ;) Ok, uploaded Color Mod 1.92 with some balance changes. Readme was changed, if necessary. But will not list all changes here. You have to DEFAULT PARAMETERS again. Default parameters for CO2: 500000, organisms: 12500 and world size: 7000 * 7000. I use higher values, but should be good and fast like that. Small BLOND viruses are a bit less effective, because the early reproduction...

Next balance update will be before 2021. ;) Need to revert and alter some late changes. Only a balance update. Default CO2 needs to be reduced too. Simulation is faster, but 600000 CO2 is too greedy, at least for my PC.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Well, I finally uploaded Color Mod 1.91, including an updated Readme file. 1.91 should run clearly faster than 1.88 (and a bit faster than 1.90beta3). In comparison to 1.88, there is a new color SPORE, that allows organisms to create different small spores, that do not grow and may hatch later (see Readme). SKY has two versions now, one only freezes movement segments (modified Sky: No), the other works as before. C4 color was completely reworked since 1.88. It makes small segments and also small...

Uploaded a new easter version, have fun. :) New feature for Spore 7-12: If the organism has nearly no energy left, is very small and not shown in color, it can sporify itself, trying to wait for better times. This can be done once for each organism. Spore costs (default value 0) are used, when the spore hatches (when it is created for spore 1-2) now. Was a mess before xD. More balance changes... Interesting world here: 2 other consumer species seem to dominate, but this Orange-Omnivore with blue segments manages to survive by using the new dormant spore function. And there are really many spore capsules of them, even though only one individual is active now.

  • MarcoA MarcoA modified a comment on discussion Open Discussion

A species, that uses the new spore function. :) It is inactive most of the time. Hatching ones may encounter many viral-plants and create many more spores. Not depleting the food source is useful. They are also able to survive mobile red consumers, which cannot kill all of them at once. Edit: RGB of the color will probably change a bit, looks too much like lavender. Even though it gets more and more complicated to find a color, that is not in use yet xD

I nearly finished (I am sure that everything works) the SPORE color (could have done it faster, but lazy...). It will have 4 variants most probably: Protected BLUE dormant spores Mobile CYAN spores (stationary organisms can have a mobile phase) Infectious (need to be eaten to infect) fruit-like spores (might create a FRUIT color for later Color Mod versions too) Low energy spores (seeds), that make the organism a r-strategist The SPORE color might raise the number of organisms on the map, but there...

Performance: Organisms will always use the faster collision detection, when they birth more than one child now. Slow one is only used at the start of the game now. Other smaller optimizations. Balance changes: -Exact formula for photosynthesis segment effectivity is now: (0.6 + (1.26 / (number of genes + 1)) + (1.68 / symmetry) * segment length. -INDIGO: if the virus energy is even reduced to <= 2.5 (was < 2.5)...

There aren´t many changes: Time between reproduction (was 20 frames for all organisms in vanilla and "10 + number of segments" in Color Mod 1.83) attempts is "10 + (5 * number of genes)" now. This might help smaller organisms in crowded situations a bit, but mostly improves performance in crowded lategame situations. Only balance change because of this: INDIGO: if the virus energy is even reduced to <= 2 the virus is not born, the infection is removed and NEW in 1.84: there is no reproduction delay,...

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Think I will use "10 + (5 * number of genes)" for the time, that needs to elapse between two reproduction attempts. This seems to work very well. Might upload later today, or tomorrow. Also showing off another organism: This one is part of a pack of omnivores with eyes, that transfer energy to each other.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

An interesting organism in my simulation: Just a harmless herbivore? Well, they just decimated both viral plants and omnivores/carnivores in my world. Destroying virus segments (front) and eating both them and bark-plants. And its sides are protected by powerful lilac energy drain segments. This kills everyone that tries to feed on them (at the moment at least).

Yes, I forgot to change these txt files. Only changed all files, that were directly accessible in Eclipse... Just wait a few days now, because I changed "time to reproduce" from "10 + number of segments" to "10 * number of genes". This might be better in preventing late game slowdowns. Doubt it will change the balance of the game really, but I have to test at least a little bit. Before Richards performance update, the game was more likely too slow down at the beginning. Since then rather the opposite...

I doubt that JTS-1.16.0 improves anything for me, but I do not really know. It works very well as it is. Biogenesis worked with all of them. Just have to download from transifex now, and test, if everything works for all languages. Did not do this today, but everything works so far and I should upload everything tomorrow.

  • MarcoA MarcoA modified a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Ok, this means, that I can edit messages files in eclipse? So I can create these tomorrow for all languages (just need to restructure, translations are complete): "T_VERSION_B=Biogenesis version: T_VERSION_CM=Color Mod version: T_VERSION_BB=Backup Button version:" ...and upload all the messages files into transifex later? I did not upload anything yet, hope this works without problems.

    Ok, nice. :)

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

"It looks like line, but not box." Language and resolution?

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Good, can I also add some general instructions anywhere? Translations should be short (especially if it leads to these problems, where a window gets too large for 1024 * 768), color names too.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

"I see problem with textbox for mutations." What is the problem? You are only allowed to use values of 0 to 10000 anyway, and they fit in.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

"At the moment when you change messages.properties and upload file into transifex, then string "T_VERSION=\nVersion 0.9 \nColor Mod version 1.82 \nBackup Button version 1\n" will be untranslated. But if strings are version neutral, then they stay translated." Ok,thanks, I understand. Will definitely do as you suggested. "Your text editor changes encoding when you edit file. Solution: to find text editor, that respects encoding." I just use Eclipse. Not sure if I can adjust something there. Can look...

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Do the Linux users get my README file there btw., and also everything that is in the "ColorMod 1_82" folder?

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Nice that it works. :) Fix the vanilla version, you mean? To use JTS 1.15.0 too then. Well, will do this tomorrow, and just replace it. No new version, because nothing really changed.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

"T_VERSION_B=Biogenesis version: T_VERSION_CM=Color Mod version: T_VERSION_BB=Backup Button version:" Because this is easier to translate? I just thought, that you think that it looked bad before, and when I looked at it I agreed, and changed it by adding \n, so it would look the same. "And add versions by code, not by messages file (do not edit them manually in future)." Ok sure, it is less work to change it just once in MainWindow.java, instead of many times for each translation in the message...

For now you can download the new version here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/biogenesis/files/Color%20Mod/1.8/ I will update the main download (compilation) too, if it is indeed compatible with Mageia. Changes: If an organism changes symmetry this will be added to the clade string now too: "<" symmetry mutated to be lower ">" symmetry mutated to be higher Individual mutation rate visible in the info toolbar now. And some minor balance changes (changed the README if necessary).

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Ok, this means that it runs now with Mageia? I had no problems with your build.xml file myself and can use it.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Do not use Ant. Just a Maven project in Eclipse. Eclipse downloads these libraries, when I change the pom.xml file. But the JTS-core is also in the jar file.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Well ok, the pom.xml file was not included, because it was not in src...

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

world.java imports: import org.locationtech.jts.geom.Envelope; import org.locationtech.jts.index.strtree.STRtree; also in pom.xml: <dependency> <groupid>org.locationtech.jts</groupid> <artifactid>jts-core</artifactid> <version>1.15.0</version> </dependency> This is enough to build the jar file, that includes the 1.15.0 JTS-core in the biogenesis jar file.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Ok, I can create a user manual folder and upload it tomorrow as 0.9 manual. I want to check first for possible mistakes.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Hi again. But the sourcecode is definitely included. "src" = sourcecode.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Just use the version with JTS 1.15.0 (if it works), do not think it makes a difference for me. And less work for testers. If it works, I will upload 1.82 and you can update, so that the Biogenesis Color Mod used for Mageia isn´t that outdated anymore... Do not think, that anything is better in 1.42, and if people do not like some new colors (functions) introduced since then, they can simply deactivate them by setting their probability to 0.

  • MarcoA MarcoA modified a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Ok... Uploading by e-mail with my slowed down internet connection just doesn´t work. I will create a folder "test" in biogenesiscolor and you can check both versions out, today or tomorrow.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Both are uploaded now. You may check. I will keep the working one, if both do, the one with JTS 1.16.0

You need exactly 1.15.0? Thought it would be better to use the newest version possible. I can upload as Color Mod 1.82?

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

It was correct and I made Biogenesis run with it :) Using jts core 1.16.0 now.

  • MarcoA MarcoA modified a comment on discussion Open Discussion

This: https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.locationtech.jts/jts-core/1.16.0 is the newer version of this: https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.vividsolutions/jts-core/1.14.0 (what I use) Because it changed from vividsolutions to locationtech, but looks like it is the newer version.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Yes, I will (try to :P) update. Newer versions should be clearly faster, better documented, more extensive and surely more fun than 1.42.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Ok, will use the x.xx format. But you can add a 0 to all x.x versions existing, if you want to use them. Everything from 1.6 and later does not run there, is this right? Because 1.6 was the first one that used Richards R tree implementation. All of them are much faster. Since 1.7 there is also a README (some sort of a manual) again.

  • MarcoA MarcoA posted a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Sure, I can do that. What is the specific problem here? Version numbers are actually only used in the "About Biogenesis" window, and for the Winrar Zip archive. If I would call the archive "Biogenesis ColorMod 1_81" instead of "ColorMod 1_81", would there be a problem too?

  • MarcoA MarcoA modified a comment on discussion Open Discussion

Ok, nice to know, that it might be or is more popular than I thought. :) Do people have another forum to talk about Biogenesis (including the Color Mod maybe?)? Because there also isn´t much activity here. I do create it for myself really (popularity does not matter in that case), and I remember searching for evolution sims, and I know the feeling to find one you like (so it was clear that I upload my personal hobbyist "toy train" xD to make some people happy), but this might help to motivate me...

Yes, you can be sure , that it is just a different name for Genetic Laboratory. This is from the manual: "The examine genes button that appears next to this information allow you to open the genetic labortory where you can examine in detail the genetic code of the selected organism, or make modified version of it." If you want, you can call it the "genes viewer"-button, and you view the genes by klicking on this button, and you reach the Genetic laboratory. And there is an explanation of the latter...

Right, transifex seems to be very helpful. But even if I did know it, I wouldn´t have believed that people want to translate the Biogenesis Color Mod. I never saw that many downloads and even so, downloads also do not mean that people really use the program for more than a few minutes or an hour.
