A more rigorous test using lsof, I found that kid3 (version info in my original post) appears to keep a pool of 19 media files open, closing old ones as new ones are opened. So, I guess it's not a bug, but something to know about, particularly if you are using windows, that if you want to manipulate one of the last 19 media files (such as play it) that kid3 has opened, it will still be open, and thus, blocked from access. Linux, of course, would not have that problem.

I should mention I use a separate process to delete the files, I don't delete them with kid3.
