We have patches to add support for MirBSD and DragonFly, and now SCO/SVR5. The build system seems to do different things per platform (lib naming), and in pkgsrc that's a bug. There's no static lib and the dynamic lib doesn't have the normal naming (with a major/minor version). We have a workaround for deadlocks on solaris and linux. The code uses "open" as a procedure name which fails on SVR5 (and is dodgy anyway as shadowing is at best boggling). pkgsrc is stable, but these should be applied upstream,...

Traditionally, this is plain text, so it can be read with "more". I think making it NEWS.md is totally reasonable as then it can be rendered to html for places that want that, without impairing the use of it as plain text, and still being "source code". I view html as a "binary" format in that it's almost always generated from something else (although I get it that it can be hand written). What I need it for is updating pkgsrc, where I want to cut/paste the content into a commit message. So I am...
In the standard approach, it is in the tarball, sort of parallel to README, INSTALL, COPYING, AUTHORS. http://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/standards.html#NEWS-File http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/html_node/Strictness.html But,t he most important thing is that it be somewhere, so for starters it would be great to add a news item on sourceforge that says what is different about 2.1.4 compared to 2.0.13 from the point of view of someone downloading 2.1.4, compiling it, installing it, and then...
