I think "attach/load" written on a single button is very confusing: does the button attach an image or does it load in memory the first file in the image? They are two totally different things made by the same button depending on what appears on the screen. I eventually discovered, just now, how it works: 1) menu --> attach --> select image: button attachs image; 2) menu --> attach --> select image --> single click on prg file: button attachs image, resets C64, which switches back to C128 mode, and...

The linked program keeps intact the pointers to bimtap and colormap, and the whole bitmap memory, when switching back to C128, so it should be possible to rebuild the image; in VICE it works partially: some colors are lost. We concluded that there is some bug in how VICE manages register $DD00... but it's too complicated for me to understand what's actually wrong under the hood, all I know is that in retrodebugger, which uses VICE internally, shows right content of $DD00 in the interface, but internally...

The program uses C128 mode as a "virtual cartridge" to hack C64, allowing keeping intact image data when swithcing back from C64 to C128 mode; but it does not work in VICE, apparently because the register which holds color map data is badly managed. I found the project on github, but I see no discussion there. Where can we discuss about this program? https://github.com/EUA/wxHexEditor It is very interesting but looks like still in very beta stage.
