    That was the issue rayzer. Almost invisible on the slim login gui there was a choose session option. Once I selected a session and logged in all was good! Now to install Timeshift Thanks all Jimmy

    Hi rayzer, to follow up which may be help to others. I moved the HDD to another PC then I followed your steps above and it appears that the login manager (lightdm) was indeed broken. I logged in via the command line successfully and installed slim login manager instead and managed to boot into my Gnome desktop environment. However I just have an X cursor and some desktop icons and the main toolbar (which used to auto hide) is missing. Could this just be a display setting with the new pc? Or is it...

    Thanks folks, it looks like this is a hardware failure. When I went back to try your suggestions, I find there's no BIOS screen at boot time and the system tries to reboot three times. I suspect a motherboard failure. I have tried the usual reseating ram etc to no avail. Jimmy

    Hi, while trying to login to Peppermint 10 recently I came up against a strange login issue. On the GUI splash screen when I enter my password it shows the password in plain text and fails to proceed with the login. Then when re-entered a second time it shows the password as asterixis and says invalid login. In an attempt to fix this I changed my password in via the grub menu console.
