Good Morning or Afternoon Peppermint Community, After debating over it with myself for the last two months, I have decided to publish the live-build trees for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Peppermint OS Classic. It gives both transparency as to how they were made, and gives the community the choice to carry it on themselves if they so choose, which is something they did not have when Mark Greaves died and took the secrets of Peppermint 10 with him. Seeing as I am not involved in Peppermint's...

Building on @cavy's answer: MY oldest machine is a Dell inspiron 1100 from 2003. That computer is old enough to drink here in the US! Whilst keeping it alive has been a fun exercise in logic and minimalism, it is rare to see hardware in service this long , and the few that are in service that long are in industrial applications, rarely for home use. Realistically, I have a thinkpad about the same age as Cavy's Dell that I do my daily tasks on, and it runs the likes of a heavyweight such as KDE just...

Ahh, so you want Peppermint to simply "blank" the screen, without locking it? So that activity continues in the background? If so, I'd be happy to show you how

  • John Faulk John Faulk posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

Let me get this correct: You want it to simply lock the screen, and not go into hibernation/sleep?

I do not have a place with the old ISOs, but i do have here a torrent file for the version you're requesting attached hereto. Its not a direct download, but I get the feeling its better than being lost to history completely...best of luck to you, friend.

Iggy, We still offer the XFCE builds as we always have, that folder (I'm assuming you're looking at the Download page?) simply contains the various ISOs. https://sourceforge.net/projects/peppermintos/files/isos/XFCE/ These are all the builds that use our flagship XFCE desktop. If you need any further assistance choosing one, let me know!

Even if Classic became a core edition*, it would not guarantee is continuity. Many of the components, transplanted from Peppermint 10 directly, are aging and may not work in the future. And with the push to wayland, it is likely LXDE will eventually get scuttled in Debian, causing the components on top of which Classic relies to be missing. There ARE some experiments currently in using LXQt instead, but they are still very early. *This is entirely up to Grafiksinc, not me.

first thing I notice is sysvinit. Have you checked that VBox doesn't require/use a systemd service? If it does, you'll need to create a sysvinit init script in order to do that. Attached is a skeleton init script I use as a starting point.

Classic, as of now, is supported for the same lifespan as Debian Bookworm, upon which it is based. So any info on support timeline will be coming from Debian themselves.

Well, have you tried out Peppermint Classic? It has the Pep10 UI with coloring similar to Peppermint ICE. Might be worth a look to see if it suits you!

  • John Faulk John Faulk posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

Hello There! What do you mean by "a version"? As in a copy of the ISO, or a new Peppermint ICE? (Or are you talking about the tool by the same name?)

Hi Simone, I'm the creator of Classic. Classic uses solely the Debian repos, so you can (theoretically) update it indefinitely, so it would not matter if I continued it or not. As Grafiksinc has stated, a future release is up in the air and not certain. it all depends on whether Trixie ends up being a suitable base or not

So from what I have read, as of now, the current list of things to be fixed are: ntp (again) xfce-goodies weird titlebar placement on UEFI for the installer open in terminal action does not work for nemo

It is bootloader related, as i suspected. Is the live ISO connected to the internet when you run calamares? Have you run sudo apt update on it? It might be because we are about due for updated ISOs

  • John Faulk John Faulk posted a comment on discussion Installation

hello there! Can you post the calamares logs? Run calamares by running "sudo calamares -d 8 > log.txt" and send us the log.txt to examine. thanks!

  • John Faulk John Faulk posted a comment on discussion Software & Applications

Yes, they are all installable. If there's a differing version, check with apt update, or see if you have the updates and/or security repo enabled. That may be where that version comes from.

Hello there! Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Peppermint's maintainer for the arm64 port. To sum up the answer to this question; YES, we will have updates in 2024, 2025, 2026, and so on so forth, so long as there's at least one or two team members with free time and a pulse. We had a brief intermission after the Passing of Mark Greaves, yes, but we have long since moved past that and have had TWO successful release cycles since then, built upon our new Debian base. We switched to such in order to...

Hello Bruce! Please Post the Questions here, that way we can coordinate on them and give an official answer

  • John Faulk John Faulk posted a comment on discussion Installation

Hi there, I'm the maintainer for the arm ISO. You need to install this firmware on your SD card, and keep it there: https://github.com/pftf/RPi4 This will place a UEFI BIOS on your Pi, and allow you to boot the ISO. From there it should be easy to install to your external drive, but BE WARNED: make sure that you have selected the external drive, because Calamares has a habit of selecting the SD card by default, and you do NOT want to erase that!

Hello Daniel, In my experience with elderly PC's, one of the more strangely common hardware failures is a short somewhere in the power button. Have you disconnected it after starting the PC to rule this out? Have you let it sit in BIOS for a while and waited to see if it randomly shut off? This would be an easy if lengthy way to rule that out

@rayzer we need your help old friend... we are building a new project called "PeppermintOS Classic" which is meant to in many ways mimic PepOS 9/10 atop Debian, to Herald our roots. Issue is, her signature color is intended to be blue, not red, and we need a wallpaper of the same aesthetic as Pep9/10, but with the distinct blue...do you think you can help us?

Good Morning Adam :) first up, thank you @pepdebian for bringing this to my attention, was much needed! Adam, I am actually working on a "Classic" variant of our Debian-based branch that is meant to be a mix of the Peppermint 10 layout (AND tools) atop a new theme. We would absolutely love to have some people on that part of the project, and as far as your cinnamon configs are concerned, I think this would be a good starting point to revive the Peppermint-Extras feature that was in Peppermint Bullseye/Chimaera....
