Sorry, but IMO Veracrypt is useless as a system disks encryption tool. Leaving swap file on a plain partition is a big privacy hole. Installing more RAM is not possible in each case. And even you do it, you cannot be sure you get no freeze. I am happy to use it for encrypted external disks and encrypted containers. It does fantastic work and it is multi-platform - I can access my data from any mainstream OS.

If you are so desperate to try Truecrypt (there is the pain of lack of efi support), try Diskcryptor first. I still use VeraCrypt for containers and external drives (cross-platform compatibility - LUKS can mount VeraCrypt containers and drives even without installing the Linux version of Veracrypt). But, after many experiences with freezing, I have been using Diskcryptor (after its resurrection) to encrypt system drives for a couple of years without any problems.
@DDD I tried TrueCrypt v7.1a. It was very inconvenient to reformat the disk from GPT to MBR and install the software from scratch. And without any future of course, just trying. After DiskCryptor's resurrection (around 2019/2020), I am a happy user of it. (To tell the truth, I use one of the GNU/Linux distributions on a daily basis. Windows is run occasionally.)

@DDD Welcome to the club! I have not been as patient as you. It's been over a year since I dropped the system disk encryption with VeraCrypt, no more freezes. (OT) A new discovery for me: gocryptfs as an alternative to Cryptomator

Now I am happy with Veracrypt for any kinds of drives (HDD, SSD, Flash, etc.) except Windows system drive. For Windows system drive, I have got very good experience since couple month with DiskCryptor, and I can do not care about Veracrypt system drive's full-disk encryption. (As a bonus, DiskCryptor is significantly faster then Veracrypt for full-disk encryption.)
