It looks to be not that dead 👍 Looking at recent changes https://sourceforge.net/p/freeimage/activity/ can see that in trunk that in the last 2 weeks is about version number was changed 3.19 version, including upgrade of various 3rd party libraries such as zlib, libpng, libRaw, which is pretty good as current freeimage 3.18 have many vulnerabilities because of that, as mentionned here C++17 Support / Updated Dependancies for next FreeImage 4.0.0 any stable release planned later this year?
