Error codes don't normally change from version to version. Historically, Mounir has not been around to troubleshoot it, so it's left to us, and so when there are just numbers for errors, it can be hard to tell exactly what to do.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

Is there still no progress on this issue? I mean, it's probably not good to use Microsoft Windows anymore because of AI going through everyone's files and examining the content, so that the search engine can give an answer to the user who is looking for that pic or vid with this or that sort of content. But it seems like a small issue with this issue with the pagefile.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

Yes, but maybe someone could post a sticky of what all the error codes mean. Otherwise, I'd have to go through the source code and make a list myself.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

If I were in your situation, I would use Clonezilla to make an image of my drive, and then I would play with it. I'd upgrade Veracrypt software, then see if my computer will boot, if I can open my files, open whatever. If there are problems, then I'd write the image back. And just to be safe, I'd also have made an image using a different cloning software, but making sure to make a forensic copy, which is important.

@jacek-kubek, I've heard of Windows writing to a partition that looks like gibberish to Windows, but in fact has a Veracrypt container, so I don't trust Veracrypt for encrypted external disks. I'd like to, though.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

@milkdrinker, I know, it's a lot of information to read through on this thread, so here's the bottom line, as far as I can tell: The problem is that the pagefile is on the system drive, which is also encrypted. It's a problem with Veracrypt, not with BitDefender. Maybe if you tell Windows not to have a pagefile, that will work, and I'd be curious to know if it does. Otherwise, either put the pagefile on an unencrypted partition, or at least one that is not the system partition, or don't have a pagefile,...

I had 1.25.9 installed on my system for the longest time, and then after all this talk about encryption of keys in RAM, found out that I had actually not turned this feature on, mindless of me. Just think of how many others also do not think to turn this on, basically having a door closed but unlocked, easy for ElcomSoft to get the password. Just to let others know that maybe Microsoft knows about this issue, because I find that Windows 11 is using the pagefile on my second internal hard drive, an HDD, instead of using the pagefile on my SSD internal drive which is running Windows. So that means, that data being saved to the pagefile is not encrypted. I think there's an option in the Group Policy Editor to make sure that Windows zeroes the pagefile before shut down. I tried freezing my system but it does not work, I think because the...

Thank you again for researching this issue and supporting Veracrypt-encrypted volumes.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on ticket #364

As I think I wrote before, perhaps the clonezilla program is properly shutting down the hard drives, but then perhaps it's the underlying operating system that for some reason has some unwritten data in the cache, so it feels it needs to turn on the hard drives again. So perhaps it's an issue that needs to be fixed with the underlying operating system, or maybe it's a command you can execute... you know what to do. :)

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on ticket #364

Nope, this does not work, as of 3.1.0.22-amd64 The external and internal drives spin down, and then they spin up again and then there's a chunk noise as power is cut.

@enigma2illusion Version 1.27 could be as long as 3 years away. @idrassi, Perhaps in the installer, have a page that states that encryption of keys in RAM is now on by default because of Elcomsoft's software, and also stating that having encryption of keys in RAM will disable hibernation and all the other ramifications, and that it will degrade performance slightly, and then perhaps some mention of possible other consequences. @idrassi, With today's CPUs, is there that much computational overhead? I mean, there are people who just can not or have not done their due diligence in exploring the whole need for encryption, and so there's a level of trust that people give you to make the right decisions for them. If you make encrypting of keys in RAM on by default, which I think you should, a more knowledgeable user can always choose to turn it off, but I think that most people who are on the forums, when they hear of Elcomsoft's...

@idrassi, It's great that you are motivated to work on splitting Veracrypt containers. But when I read through the forums, I see a lot of people looking for ways to recover their data, because they quick formatted their hard drive(s). It shouldn't be that hard to write a program to recover the data, right? I mean, as much as can be recovered. And from all the posts that I've seen about Veracrypt containers, and how sometimes they're no longer accessible, that sounds like a priority too.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

@DimmY, I think the easiest thing to do is to use the latest version of VeraCrypt that supports TrueCrypt file containers, or a TrueCrypt system, and then decrypt them, move the data to somewhere temporary, and make new ones under VeraCrypt. I've only used encrypted volumes, not file containers. Decrypting a VeraCrypt volume, uninstalling that version of VeraCrypt, and the installing an older version of VeraCrypt, and then encrypting the system partition, is the method I have to use if I want to...

Also, on another system running Windows 7, my system never used to freeze up, but then it started to, either because of one of those rare updates from Microsoft for an operating system so old, or because of an update to Avast antivirus. Yeah, we all welcome news from Mounir. But honestly, what happens is we all get excited to hear from him again, and then it's another year or year and a half before we hear something again. Probably the fastest way to hear something from him is to post some sort of Veracrypt fix or translation or whatever using git, and then he will likely look at it and commit the changes.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

I think there are bigger questions, such as why people generally have been hard to find to contribute to the development of Veracrypt. Is it just that people just don't know encryption software that well? I've been on the forums for years, and I think @idrassi is testing the software changes that he's made on his machine, but there are a lot of little touches that could be made that maybe would make a lot of people feel a bit better. Money definitely answers everything.

@mitsen20, Did you boot off of the Veracrypt emergency rescue disk? How did that work out? Possibly, you could take the hard drive out of the computer, put it into a hard drive enclosure, boot an operating system that can run Veracrypt, like maybe a linux distribution, and then mount the partition using your password, and then you can check and fix the errors in the hard drive - it's one of the options that you can right-click and get.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

@Alex, there comes a point, though, when a person definitely wishes he would have spent more time looking into encryption programs such as Veracrypt.

@scanhalo, What are you talking about? You can remove the software. To be safe, boot off a clonezilla rescue disk and make an image of your drive first. Then, boot into your system, and decrypt it. After you decrypt it and reboot back into your system, you can uninstall Veracrypt. This is the method one needs to follow if one wants to downgrade his version of Veracrypt or to uninstall Veracrypt, except making an image before hand is not really necessary, but is safer.

So possibly to fix this problem, put the minimum cpu state at 100% and the maximum cpu state at 100%? But I think Windows doesn't honour those values. I found out why crash dumps weren't written to my hard drive and that's because my recovery partition that Windows creates was invalid. So, I had to decrypt the system, re-install Windows, which then created an additional Recovery partition which was valid, then I deleted the old partition, and tested out writing a .dmp file and it worked.

  • DDD DDD posted a comment on discussion General Discussion

I'm not sure why you're getting that message, but it's most likely normal. If you're saving images of your system, then I think you're doing something right, such as Time Machine, because then if anything goes wrong, you can go back to an earlier image.

I've also had the system freeze that wasn't even encrypted, so it's a problem with the driver itself or the Veracrypt program. Truthfully, because I didn't know if one or more of my files were now buggered, I decided to use Macrium to quickly make an exact forensic copy backup, and then write it back, just in case the system froze again. But that's important - to make it a forensic copy.

Yes, you would have to decrypt first, and then uninstall Veracrypt. I had encrypted my system with Camellia-SHA512, and my system froze while decrypting!! Now I understand why some are so frustrated. I mean, now I don't even know if my own file is buggered up now or not, the one file that may have been read to or written to while the system froze. But that was veracypt 1.60. Maybe it's Veracrypt 1.60 something in there that's the culprit, or maybe it's a combination of things.

@rostok, You're welcome for the quick reply. Usually, there are lots of crickets on this board. But the Win 10 updates work as the win 11 ones, so yeah, just update using windows update.

So, I recently installed veracrypt 1.60 and also was looking through the code, saw one warning for the twofish file, another for serpent, I think another for whirlpool, nothing for camellia nor sha, so I decided to encrypt using camellia and using one of the sha's for hashing (I know NSA is listening) and tried my test file and it freezes the system now just about 50% of the time, which I think is progress. There are a lot of warnings for the random.c file, so since this issue seems to happen randomly,...

It took my system something like 9 hours to encrypt using Serpent-Whirlpool. on an ssd drive. That's way too long. Using Camellia-sha512, only 2 hours.

@rostok, I know it can be a hassle, but sometimes you can find the information faster if you search the forums. You do not need to do system decryption if you update using Windows Update to 22h2. If you use a usb stick running windows 10-22h2, I've found that it's necessary to decrypt the system.

So I tried running setup.exe in the windows install usb while running Windows, to install windows thus doing a repair installation, while the hard drive was encrypted, and even though I executed the command "setupcomplete.cmd" while seeing the "restarting shortly" message made by the Windows installation program, the installation failed with some error mentioning SAFE_OS phase. So it looks like the system would have to be decrypted in order to do someting like that, unless I am missing some important...

It's defined as a WORD pointer array, I think, with WORD being some structure of some sort. Anyways, there's no need for CPU to be used at minimum when one is trying to encrypt or decrypt as fast as possible.

No, why wouldi t be related to the linux kernel? It's screen size. When at a low resolution, the text shows up as it would in the 1980s, that size. So there are certain windows that can come up in the encryption or decryption process, where some of the text can't be seen because it's off the screen to the right. Maybe next time I am doing it, I can look at which window it is. There are no scrollbars on the text windows, or how does one view text off the screen?

Well, you can change it to "Skip this step", I suppose, or keep the Cancel and add "Quit to Main Menu..." or something like that.

Oh, I didn't see your response in my inbox @steven_shiau because sourceforge did some thing with their forum options where if I initiate a thread or even post in a thread, subscription to that thread is not automatic, so I didn't even know you replied. So what happens is first, Clonezilla can't even recognise the hard drive, won't write to it even though my image was 750 GB and my hard drive is 1 TB. And it wrote the 2 or 3 partitions once, and it wasn't even a nice blue clonezilla screen as you...

Using Windows 10 22h1 I think, and veracrypt 1.23, encrypting SSD seems to go slow, considering it's an SSD. I can see in Task Manager that 8/8 cores are used, but the CPU speed is at minimum, like 0.9GHz, and each core processes at about 18% while encrypting a 1 TB internal SSD. Maybe this is related to some of the code I was looking at. I was looking at EncryptionThreadPool.c and the .h file too, and was looking at the GetCPUCount function. So first, you have this #ifndef DEVICE_DRIVER, declare...

Yes, I've tried it out and found that if you select it, it will proceed to reboot, but when you enter your veracrypt password and windows boots, it will say that the reset failed. It's good that I looked into your problem because it helped me see what was causing memory dump files to not be created when I initiated a system crash / blue screen. However, if you're doing Windows Updates using Windows Update, there is no need to decrypt. But if you're using a Windows installation usb/dvd, I forget now,...

@bh25, I figured out why I wasn't getting dump files, while helping another user on here. When I went to do a Windows reset by opening Settings -.> Windows Update -> Recovery -> reset pc. Even with Veracrypt uninstalled and system decrypted, still no dump file when I initiate a blue screen. I tried with the Reset Windows and it told me I had to insert my installation usb stick and reboot, so I did, and booted off the stick, and I did a repair install. So, it's different from a Windows Reset. I saw...

Clonezilla 3.0.1-8, x64, large font to RAM, MBR version I was writing from encrypted on external hard drive to brand new internal SSD drive, unformatted. Clonezilla was having a hard time figuring it out, using the Beginner options. I deselected one option, not sure which one, possibly one having to do with the MBR or partition table, and Clonezilla asked for decryption password, worked, so it was writing somewhere for something like 2 hours, and then it proceeded to do it all over again. So, twice....

Clonezilla 3.0.1-8 x64, large font, to RAM, MBR version So I was writing an image to my internal SSD, Clonezilla-encrypted, and I entered the decryption password and it worked and partway through the writing process, I cancelled by pressing Ctrl-C. Then, starting over, I chose the options again, came to the password prompt asking for the decryption password and I just hit "enter" or Esc or the space bar or something, and the password took and started writing to the internal hard drive! Maybe you...

This is an old issue, but still an issue. I was using Clonezilla 3.0.1-8 x64, large font to RAM, and the last few screens, like when you're choosing whether to check the image or to encrypt the image, if you click "Cancel", it does not cancel and bring you to the screen that asks you where you want to start over from. It may work when you do it the first time, but then if you go through all the steps and cancel 2 or 3 times, it will quit cancelling.
