Hopefully nothing. It just feels like cheating when there's a *.tar.gz available. I also didn't know they existed. Someone was having trouble with dd_rescue on their distribution of choice and I couldn't get it building because they had gcc and make but no automake, now it's working! 1) Download *.tar.gz 2) Extract to a folder 3) CD to folder 4) Run: make 5) Profit!

If the current version of dd_rescue built correctly, I think I could help, but I'm too rusty to get a broken Makefile working. In theory, this is just a binary program you can copy onto a CD with the latest minimal Ubuntu (or puppy linux) as live cd.
